Problem Mounting Tires.
Problem Mounting Tires.
I bought some southern ways rims, very similar to epsilon. I believe they were suppose to be 15x6.5 with a +12 offset. Has anyone heard of problems mounting a tire on these type of rims? I went to a ghetto tire place trying to save a couple of bucks and the jacked up my lip of two wheels and trying to mount tires. A 15" tire wouldnt go on and a 16" was too big. I was pissed when they tried to say I brought them the rims with the damaged lip. I was about to go postal. Good for them that they are repairing the two wheels and returning them. So.. I took it to Discount Tire. They guy measures the rim with some tool and sure enough it says 15. But for some reason they are having issues slipping on a 15" tire. Is there a kung fu method of mounting these tires? Some one told me they need to be mounted from the back because of contour of the rim. Here are some sneek pics of car and rim w/o tires.

Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
You may want to re-measure the rim to make sure its not a rare (but useless) metric wheel. It will measure 15.35" if its metric.

Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
I thought I saw 15" when they guy at Discount Tire brought this claw looking tool to measure it from outside and inside.
Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
They are a reversed drop center. The tires need to be installed over the rear lip and not the face of the wheel.arkitekz wrote:I thought I saw 15" when they guy at Discount Tire brought this claw looking tool to measure it from outside and inside.
Any tire shop should know that.

Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
Most tire machines are capable of grabbing the outside of the wheel lip or grab the inside of the hoop. For reversed drop center wheels they need to grab the wheel from the face around the lip then install the tire as usual. Then remove the assembled piece and inflate.arkitekz wrote:So I guess the question now is, who has the equipment in San Diego to do this properly. Man these wheel are a headache, but they are HOT!!!
Go to another tire shop after you get your repaired wheels back.

Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
I am praying I find a way to get these on. I just hope they are not metric sized wheels. That would break my heart. I bought these 4 years agao and they have been sitting in boxes until about 2 months ago when i was ready to restore them. Ill keep you guys posted if I have luck mounting them this friday at another tire place.

Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
Like I told you via PM, the chances of them being Metric are quite slim. I would trust that the info given by vgwagon is much more likely. Go to your local tire guy with vgwagon's description of the wheel and mounting procedure and you should find that this was the problem. Just make sure you go to a tire place with a good reputation, I know here in Calgary, its worth the extra money to use a good tire store.

Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
Well I spent half the day driving around town trying to mount these and no luck. I went to two Discount Tires and Pann Auto. The lips will need to be repaired bceause they are a little dented from all these shops trying to install. Im throwing in the towel and letting someone else find the secret way of mounting them. Thanks Guys.
Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
That sucks man. Can you call the company you got them from, or were they from a private party? I have never heard of such a hassle before. Good luck sorting it out.
Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
I can't believe that not one tire shop could install those for you. Goes to show that anyone can start a tire shop business.arkitekz wrote:Well I spent half the day driving around town trying to mount these and no luck. I went to two Discount Tires and Pann Auto. Any shop with a tire machine like this should be able to install.
Did you call around and ask if they could install tires on a reverse drop center rim......if they ask "what" hang up and call the next shop until you find one that says yeah no problem.

Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
They got dented by them using these bars to get the tire to seal. They got the tire on the rim but they couldnt get it to seal properly on the bead. I actually found a place in Los Angeles I am goung to try this weekend called Center City Tire Service who uses a Hunter TC3500 Tire Mounter. This is my last shot before I let someone else deal with the headache.

Re: Problem Mounting Tires.
I'm really curious to see what the outcome of this is.
having watched my "tire guy", try to both mount and dismount my 20" x 9.5" x 13" GoodYear cantilever race tires, on my 8" panasports....It took 2 of us to accomplish it, just to wrestle them, with out killing the wheel. Those tires were so stiff, they did not want to flex as the rotating bar tried to drag them over the bead.
That last shop, that removed a race tire, not my regular person, actually distorted the center, relative to the rim, so it now has a hair of run out. was I pissed!
good luck and lets us know what the problem really was.
