S13 Suspension in a 510

Post by SR20DAT » 05 Nov 2010 10:19

I am in the process of installing s13 rear suspension in my 510. For the rear wheels I have 18x10.5 et22 Volk Te37's. I mocked up the complete rear suspension with my flares and determined that the rear was 4 inches too wide. I made a jig to narrow the sub-frame. I am in the process of aligning everything and making shock mounts. Once that is complete I will mount it all square in the car. Has anyone else tried this? I talked to Dan at DGR and he said he narrowed one, but never installed it. I am also interested if anyone has converted the front suspension to s13 also. I am interested in converting to rack and I thought there might be a way to make the rest of the suspension fit.

If you can do that with the rear suspension, the front should be cake.

There are threads on Ratsun about the S13 strut conversion. Not the same thing as using the entire S13 front suspension, but about as close as I've seen done. You'll also want to check out the Ecotec project build here on The Realm, as that's probably more in line with what you're looking for.

That rear end ought to be able to handle everything an L16 can throw at it.

Yeah it probably would although it will never see an L16. I am putting in q45 rear running gear. The r200 vlsd and the super beefy q45 axles and hubs. I didn't think the stock 510 rear end would handle the power I wanted, and I didn't want to have to replace broken parts all the time.

.
Is that the ride height???? .......... or do you plan to lower it more???

I just don't understand why the flares are SO huge ......... you could tuck those wheels with BRE bubble flares

A guy on Ratsun (username 'tiltnose510') did that swap, and Jeff posted many pictures...

pretty serious structural mods are needed to get the rear suspension into a 510, but then again, it's just steel that can be tamed by a welder, a cutter, a hammer, and a will.

I have BRE flares for it. They do not work with my wheel tire combo. The OD of my wheels is much bigger than stock. Therefore the wheel well has to move up to accommodate. BRE flares keep the wheel well in the same location. They wider the outer lip, but do not give any additional clearance where the fllare meets the body. Its not at the exact ride height. And it looks way different in person.

Here's what it looked like with track rims and BRE flares. With this setup, I had like 1 in of travel till it hit the flare. And it looked like a monster truck.

S13 front suspension in a 510, looks like they used the S13 front crossmember, cut and rose jointed control arms.

Can't see a sway bar in there though which is interesting. This was some jap car I found on the net btw.

Tis not a 510 crossmember, either. Some rumors that a S13 crossmember would bolt to a 510 chassis. I had a spare but never confirmed it. Would still leave work to be done to narrow the track, which is probably the harder job.

I have the s12 crossmember and front suspension in my 510. Its a bit of work getting the geometry set up right as the cross member needs a lot of work to move it rearward in the chassis. The control arms are double sheer instead of single like the 510 and there almost 2 inches further forward which would increase caster quite a bit and locate the control arm too far forward in the wheel well. Ice house on this forum and on ratsun has done this a few times and is where I got the idea from. The s12 crossmember is narrower as is the rack than the s13. I have mine set up with the s12 front control arms narrowed, custom TC rods, shortened s12 strut housings and stock s12 brakes. If you must have an s13 front end you could do what the s12 guys do and use the s12 rack and crossmember in the 510 but use the s13 control arms and struts. You can find this info in a search it on clubs12. I think it would be a much better fit than using the complete s13 setup.

Thanks for the info. Will the sr20 bolt directly to a s12 cross member or does it have to be flipped like a 510?

The s12 crossmember is already set up for front sump no need to flip it and sr20 motor mounts will bolt right up. But because the crossmember needs to be moved back on the chassis to center the control arms the motor mounts on the crossmember must be moved forward to accommodate. Unless you want your engine rubbing the firewall. :D
