240/260/280z struts

Post by datzenmike » 24 Nov 2010 17:26

280zx struts are preferred for the 510. Why not the 240/260/280z ones? Guy I know on ratsun 'seems' to have a set on his dime. From reading on here it's always 'you can't use them' 'spindle is small, same as the dime' several other vague referances. So what's the skinny on this. What's the reason they are not used?

I thought they were of an undesirable angle (where the ball joints go) for the 510.

Spindle angle relative to the strut tube is much greater and unusable on a 510...unless...you swap over to the complete Z front suspension (including rear-facing T/C rods). Dave Lum has done this on his VG30DETT car...and that's the only person I know who has done this.

So it is possible (as almost everything is), but depends on the reasoning behind it. The Z-car suspension swap would also enable a rack and pinion conversion with more ease than some of the other swaps. But as a brake-only solution, it is poor economics.

Spindles are not small like the 510, they are the same as 280zx, 300zx stuff.

Thanks. The spindle is not the same as the 510, got it.

Aren't the front brakes on the Z's solid rotors where as the ZX comes with vented rotors?

Yes.

Here's the hub with what I think is the S30 caliper.

I think the main reason they are not usually used is because the bolt spacing where the strut mounts to the steering arm is different than the 510/280zx/200sx struts.

I believe in SCCA only 280Z struts and brakes are allowed for G Production.

No, the 510 spindles are smaller.
