240Z Front Brakes on a 510, How?

Post by Dave Patten » 30 Jun 2011 13:12

SCCA in their infinite wisdom resricts the brakes to eiither stock 510 or 240Z (caliper/rotor) on the Datsun 510 when raced in F Production.

Does anyone know of a simple way of doing this? Struts and hubs are open so initially I thought 240Z struts, but the spiindle to tube angle is greater than the 510. This kicks the wheel outward when at a proper camber setting and makes the track too wide.

I think I may be onto something by using the early 200SX strut (S10 or S110) that has the 510 spindle to tube angle. These I beleive share the 240Z caliper mount bolt spacing as well. Not sure what hub or rotor would be needed to make it work.

I know, no one wants to go to solid rotors, but I'm limited by the class rules. Any ideas?

I had seen the DPR hubs but was hoping for something that used a strut with the larger bearings.

My 1200 racecar has what I was told to be 240Z spec hubs (they are aluminum, supposedly a Mac Tilton design). It used 4 pot FIA calipers. The rotors are 240Z with about 3/8" turned off the OD. The struts that came on the car had custom brackets welded on for the FIA calipers. The current ones are supposedly 200SX struts and they still have the OE caliper brackets with a slight amount removed on the mounting surface to center the caliper on the rotor.

VGWagon had 240Z calipers with solid rotors on his wagon originally. I PM'd him, hopefully he can reply with what that combo was.

The 240Z set-up will be going on a 510 racecar. With about every racecar I have ever owned it is the one off, custom fabricated or modified parts that are the first to get damaged. I have since adopted a philosophy to use as many unmodified OE parts as possible so repairing the inevitable doesn’t require fabricating all the parts from the ground up again.

I do appreciate your suggestion, its just that Don doesn't always have stock on hand and it can be a while waiting to get restocked parts. With my luck he would have sold the last of what I needed the day before I called him.

i have a set of S110 (solid rotor) strut assemblies, if you want them or any measurements

Dave,
My shop mate who also runs a vintage 510 is running what I believe are S110 200SX struts with 240 brakes. Which hubs and rotors he is using is not known to me. I can confirm with Paul later this weekend and get back to you.
I do know that the set up came from Jim Frula in Seattle as this is a set up he has used for years apparently. It is a bolt on set up, but does not work with 280ZX steering arms as we found out.

My old brake setup was with shortened 200sx struts. The stock 200sx rotors and the 240z caliper straight bolts on (80's Toyota pickups have the same caliper as the 240z)......you could also use the Toyota 4-runner (non-vented rotor) 4 piston caliper if you like as it bolts on also. Definitely an improvement over the stock 510 stuff. High pedal effort in my cars case but I was running a 280zx master....once I went to the 300zxTT 4 piston caliper pedal effort was much easier.
Hope this helps.
