Sticky, wide, 13" and 14" tires - Toyo Proxes R888
A recent issue of Grassroots Motorsport has an ad from Tire Rack with a new tire from Toyo, the Proxes R888:

Yes they're comp tires and won't wear well, but that's not why you'd be interested in a seriously-wide, small-rimmed tires. And they look more streetable than the Hoosier A6 which comes in wide, small sizes.

Damn...I need 205/50 x 15..
This tire has been out for awhile, and is comparable to my Yoko 048, maybe a hair softer.
These type of tires are stunning on a 510, with a well setup suspension.

They are available in a 205 50ZR 15, and here is a good video review of both track and street use....

2007? Tire Rack's ad has "NEW" smeared across the top. Those bastards!

Re: Sticky, wide, 13" and 14" tires - Toyo Proxes R888
I run the 205/60x13 Toyo RA1R's on my Datsun 1200 when at Vintage races. They actually stick pretty well for a 100 wear rating DOT tire. They seem to be close to the Hoosier radials others run, but I really like the car better on Goodyear slicks.

anyone got more time on this tire, specifically in the 15 inch version?
Re: Sticky, wide, 13" and 14" tires - Toyo Proxes R888
I ran a few sets of 195 15's on my car. First the R888's and now the R888r's. I use them for autox which isn't what they are made for. The R888's heated up super slow the R888r's are much faster. Still not as fast as thread wear 200 autox tires. Our autoX is simply RWD unlimited. So Usually I do pretty will. I got 3rd on Sunday. The two cars in front of me were high HP well setup cars and good drivers. A S2k staged boost E85 with R888's and a BMW on slicks a really good driver races all the time, basically every weekend he finds something to take it to haha.B^2 wrote:anyone got more time on this tire, specifically in the 15 inch version?
I bought them because I already had the other 200 thread wear tires that were a 195 width. Turns out the R888's are much wider then they say haha. Keith says the sidewalls aren't stiff enough. I haven't tried any tread wear 60 tires yet so they feel awesome to me!
I daily drive my car with them and race with them. They last about 8 months to a year. I can't wait to get a set of 225 45 13's!!!!

Thanks for the feedback, I've been looking at a pair of 195/50/15 R888R's for my 510. Not doing auto-x yet but would like to in the future. Part of me wonders if it's worth getting an R-spec tire for mostly street driving. I dont really drive in the rain but I can't decide whether having the extra traction is worth the trade off.
Re: Sticky, wide, 13" and 14" tires - Toyo Proxes R888
Once you have tires with good grip you never want anything else. If you don't daily it or drive it in the rain what is the issue?

Re: Sticky, wide, 13" and 14" tires - Toyo Proxes R888
One maybe unforeseen downside to running R-comps on the street is that the limits of the tires are so high, the cornering speeds achievable are maybe a little excessive for public roads. Even with 200 tread wear tires on my car, driving the car near its limits (aka "the fun zone") is way faster than any normal traffic. So if you're not planning on doing much competition, you may have more fun with a tire in the 200 tread wear range.

You could also get a set of "eco" tires, then you can light them up at will no mater how much HP you have. 600 treadwear tires can be fun sometimes.
If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?
