Disk brake options
Re: Disk brake options
Why is easy, I don't want to buy new parts when I don't have to. I don't need bigger brakes really, I just want to have a vented disk rather than a just a thin solid disk.
Re: Disk brake options
'Cept that to go along with your vented rotor you need a new caliper to fit over the wider rotor, hence bigger brakes.RTB wrote:I don't need bigger brakes really, I just want to have a vented disk rather than a just a thin solid disk.
DP's conversion will likely be very nice as all his work generally is. It will also be multiples more in cost than a ZX swap.
Someone here once did a brake swap using off-the-shelf parts that fit the 510 spindle, but IIRC he was in Euroland and used parts we can't readily obtain. There is also this from an old DQ:
Volvo caliper/ZX vented rotor upgrade.
Supposedly the 280zx vented rotor bolts up to the stock 510 hub. A short spacer is installed between the hub and rotor (thickness unknown). Volvo four-pot calipers for the vented Volvo rotor (from the 6cyl models) bolt on. This is an interesting combination. I hope to verify this soon. One possible drawback to any Volvo caliper is the weight. The caliper for the vented conversion weighs 9 lbs.
That's OLD information, remains unverified AFAIK, but could be something to pursue. Unless you're looking for bolt-on. DP's yer man. Troy Ermish may also have something.

His front kit is 550 on his site. I would imagine that a good swap still costs more.
Re: Disk brake options
It says "front" but it's showing rear.

Yea I'll just have to call.
Re: Disk brake options
From what I remember, the whole swap cost me about $1200... part of that is because I wound up rebuilding those Porsche units which wasn't cheap.

Re: Disk brake options
I just wanted to chime in on the wheel bearing size difference. I have driven my car with both the 510 struts and zx struts. I can say that it was a very big difference in wheel bearing/spindle flex between the two. If I went through and switchback or slalom and then got on the brakes, the pedal would move down about an inch with the 510 struts. The pad knockback was way to much. Went to zx struts, and now I don't have anywhere close to the pad knockback. The bearing are literally twice as big.

Re: Disk brake options
My struts are Datsun competition struts. Once they're dead I'll switch to zx. Called Don. He has a new kit coming out that I probably go with.
Re: Disk brake options
The new kit uses 300zx rotors and 4runner calipers. Should give ample stopping power and not a ton of money.
Re: Disk brake options
Most 4Runner calipers are iron. Is DP using aluminum versions? Might also have to change wheels as that 4Runner piece is huge.

Re: Disk brake options
It's aluminum. Its from a first gen 4runner. Those were smaller because they weren't big and heavy

Re: Disk brake options
Good comment on pad "knock back". Having a firm caliper AND a spindle that does not flex is key to having confidence in your brakes. You will never be able to drive fast if you have to deal with a "double" pump to get the pads back out..PERIOD!
Of all the stuff we have to deal with on our cars, any car for that matter, is when the brakes are not right there when you need them.
I had aluminium early Wilwood calipers on my car, which flexed a lot with my combination, drove me crazy. Many times I wished I just had good ole' steel 280zx calipers on my struts. Thankfully today's aftermarket calipers are way better than some of the early stuff.
Bottom line, always keep that thought in mind of minimizing ANY flex in the brakes, when picking components, even for street use.
