Front Suspension Issue HELP

Postby datsun5104dr » 18 Mar 2016 10:01

So I'm installing the front suspension in my 510. Front 280zx strut tubes with T3 Coilovers, T3 camber plates, Tokico Illuminas, FutoFab Lower Control Arms and TC rods along with T3 RCA's. The RCA bolt heads are hitting the lower control arm (where it bolts to the ball joint) when turning the hub. I know the car isn't on the ground and there's a lot of free play on the spring. Will I be fine once the car is on the ground? I don't want to fully assemble the other side if there's an issue I need to fix that I'm unaware of. Thanks

Does it stop hitting if you load the suspension?

If I am understanding you correctly, shouldn't there be a top hat on top of the spring? it's been a while since I've had mine apart

I see the same thing. I bet it would handle really bad with the steering arms reversed!

and this is why you shouldn't rush things! Thank guys! I'm concerned with the clearance still. I don't think it will correct the clearance issue. The guys that have this similar setup, remember the clearance being so close?

I don't think you are saying this correctly. This is the left or driver's side picture. But the turn stop bolt on the steering arm knuckle is facing outwards. It should 'bottom out' on extreme left hand turns by hitting a brace on the LCA. It has to be a right side knuckle. There.

I don't think it would steer differently as they are the same length arms. If anything the toe would be out and tie rods would need to be lengthened or shortened... but this would have been a give away that something wasn't put back together right. Did this same thing on my 521. Toe was WAY out when done.

OP, you'll find there may be conditions in which one side of your front suspension is at full droop. At no point in any possible travel do you want things to bind up.

OP: MK and Duke are correct.

The ball joint hole in the 510 knuckle is offset which causes the RCA bolts to move further in when the knuckle is on the wrong side. Once you get the steering knuckle on the correct side, all will be well. See below:

Thanks guys, switched the knuckles. Looks good. The turn stops are hitting the lower arm like they should. I'm still having the front RCA bolt head hitting the bolt head for the ball joint. Only at full right turn...

Full right turn and full droop is a pretty unlikely driving scenario. It wouldn't have me all that worried. I'd put tape on the bolt heads to see if you ever get interference. Solution might be to ditch the washer and hex heads and go to button head bolts... McMaster.com

I have my ball joints bolted UNDER the LCA, like you do, because it appears they are designed this way. It has been suggested that they are supposed to go ON TOP of the arm. I am using the later-style steel arm, so this area is thinner than your aluminum arms. The thickness of the arm in this area is moving your bolt heads closer together. There's a thread somewhere where I have photos of my arrangement, and others posted pics of the ball joint on top for comparison. I think there's even a shot from a factory manual showing the ball joint on top of the arm.
Wright or wrong, I believe this would solve your interference.
