71 Pumpkin Pie Build Unflared LZ 2.2

Post by cartel »

This isnt my first 510- its the latest addition to my primarily nissan - ford family.

it finally is about to begin- washed it today and now the serious work is to start on the upgrades-
Currently has a L2.2 z 5 speed and 3.90 r160.. so its driveable

Engine choice isnt finalized yet - im all over the place - its either SR20 or Ka24e
already have a SR20 sitting here with 300zx trans and adapter with custom local turbo kit (scremin) - LInk standalone ecu-
the KA24e i have is an old nasport GT3 race motor- i have new pistons - Carillo rods- JE's- Custom adjustable rockers- Drysump- the only issue other than lowering the compression enough for 94 or converting to E85 is the location for dry sump tank in trunk as i think i want to retain the back seat even though no one will likely ever be in it.. The SR seems so "common" im leaning more towards the KA..I have a dual carb intake and would likely put Jenvey 50mm throttle bodies for the efi part- and then most likely a Link ecu.
I would need a transmission if i do the KA the same idea of a 300zx with an adapter. Vance has a few transmissions would just have to get the adapter..the KA will only be about 250hp NA the SR would be closer to 350 + not sure if the dime NEEDS more than 250 8)
___________
update_ dec 2019 _
after getting the SR back from the engine shop ive decided that its too much HP for the unflared car-- and as the disease kicks back in i decided to convert my other car to SR thats flared.
_______________

to do list :

Coilovers all 4 corners
short struts - Bilsteins or tokikos- last option is koni race inserts depending on availability
adj tc rods monoball
DP racing camber plates
bumpsteer adj
rear camber adj-
front splined blade type swaybar
rear swaybar splined
Brakes all 2 piece rotors/hats
skyline GTR oem brembo gold calipers to go with the pumpkin theme -

_______ Jan 2020 update
as the build has progressed- turns out the oem Brembos will not fit in a 15" wheel as the caliper mounting ears are too long to go that small of a rotor-- so its getting wilwoods on all 4 corners now-
_____________________

15 x 7 wheels and Nankang AR-1 tires 205-50-15
4.44 diff
fritz cv shafts- or DSS
stainless exhaust with V bands

factory tach got in Dec 19 from Butters..

what else do i need to do?

all subject to change

Beautiful. All of your choices look good, nice that the body is all done. That's one of my favorite Datsun colors.

I love the sound of the KA you've got, but I'm all for different stuff. Also good choice on the 4.44 gears I'm a huge fan of mine. Will be following this

icehouse -- i think i read somewhere your car is considered "low" so thats what im shooting for is icehouse low.. :D

and the SR still could happen i was looking at the white 510 michael spreadbury built and its pretty clean-- pretty sure i met him 20 years ago at shasta with a v6 dime..

+1 for Scremin turbo SR!

Those look like R34 brembos? They're pretty big! Will take some fancy footwork to get them inside 16s let alone 15s. Perhaps something like the Datsport brackets to offset everything inward would help gain some caliper clearance? http://www.datsport.com/brake-front-cal ... K3233.html

Car looks very sharp! Looking forward to more updates of a local car!

i will just make my own brackets for the calipers thats easy. i also have hats already here that may work - In a previous life i used to build brake kits for 240s and the odd 510. I created the 240sx rear disc conversion for a Z - Neely in Ca was making the brake lines custom and i had ebrake adapters for cables- Thats been a widely copied kit now . I still have a few sets of the original run of cnc brackets- i guess i should clean out the shop some day
most likely be a coleman racing rotor and 8 on 7 pattern for hat. i havent tried the calipers yet but i was thinking a 12.2" rotor may be enough for those to fit the pad curve and that will fit under a 15" wheel but considering the 510 has the limit of the tires i dont see needing larger brakes than what are on a GT3 race car .

i had "thought" i was going to do 15x7 wheels but after seeing the white one with 17 x 7.5 im rethinking that- as its got 215 40 17s about 23.8" tall tire and the 205 50 15 is an inch shorter . all depends what i have to do to make those fit- unfortunately 16" doesnt seem to have much tire choice

with the Nankang AR-1 order on the way- i picked 15" for now- ive got 205s all around and going to try the 225's on a 8" wheel to see if everything fits under- i know the 205s fit fine- but can always do as spriso did and move the a arms in - but hoping that all i have to do is notch them for tire clearance

on the brakes i tried the OE brembos on a 12.2 rotor and it wont clear a 15" 3 pce wheel- the same rotor with a wilwood superlite leaves 1" of rim clearance! i also tried a Outlaw 4000XD caliper and it fits with 1/2" to clear inner wheel- i have a set of 300TT calipers im hoping those fit - just have to "borrow" them off the Z to see-- then the brembos can go onto the z as its got 17" wheels/

working on front brake kit-- so far 12.2 rotors- these are 1.25" but will order some 1" i think as this is probably overkill -- this is fitting inside the 15 x 7 VTO's

onto TC rods- made some billet spacers to fit the original rubber mount and will be a 1/2" grade 8 bolt- didnt feel like driving to find the right washers for the nut side so Tig welded some Grade 8 washers together--
