So a quick update (which will take ages using dialup), I came across a genuine 72 SSS body for sale, minus all the bolt-on panels and interior, engine, driveline, pretty much a bare shell. It was advertised as panelled, ready for paint and it was way less rusty than my other shell, (which had lots of dents in the rear quarters from having heavy stuff in the boot) and it was a genuine SSS so I bought it since I already had the SSS dash and badges.

Idropped the shell off to my panelbeater in early April and for once my motivation isn't what's holding this project back, it's his!

Here's where it's at so far:

On the bright side, rust between the floor and the sound deadening sure makes it easy to lift all that stuff off! It just peeled away in big sheets.... The fibreglass front guards didn't fit this shell as well as they did the old one, basically the bonnet wouldn't shut with them fitted at first, now they sort of fit, but not nicely.

I bought some Techno Phantoms (14x6.5 +12) as a birthday present to myself, unfortunately the seller wasn't too honest and they turned out to have some tiny cracks in the centres radiating outwards, so I now need to budget to get those repaired too.... it doesn't seem fair when I always try to be as honest as possible when I sell stuff!! Oh well.

Long time no updates!

I feel pretty bad when I look at all these threads that haven't been updated in years, no doubt most of the owners lost motivation and sold their cars or parted them out. This update is just to show that I still have my car. And to show Hainz, as I may have given the impression that I intended to sell up last time I talked to him! Sorry man!

Anyway, to bring you up to speed I ended up having to take a guy to court to get my money back for the crappy work he did on this, (what little he actually did). I've moved house/cities several times and I've kept the car, even though it's a giant PITA to move a project that's in pieces. I've changed jobs several times.

Through all of this I still have it. I ended up winning the court case, and with the funds from that plus my redundancy payout I was able to pay a professional body shop to paint and panel the car. Yay! It looked something like this when I got it back:

Unfortunately the first guy lost my front door hinges, so they had to spray the car and the doors separately, leaving me with painted doors not fitted to the car. Eventually I located some hinges (from torqued, the 510 realm's other Kiwi member), pulled them apart and fitted new Nissan bushes to them.

As you can see even with my crappy phone pics, it's nice and shiny but it had that big run plus a few other issues that didn't show up on the phone camera pics. So I had to take it back and tell them to fix the issues. They weren't happy about doing it, but I didn't think that these kinds of issues were acceptable for the price I paid. Anyway, they got that stuff fixed, except for the flaky engine bay paint, but at that point I was over dealing with them and also I had to move the car as the lockup had been leased. This move involved a ferry ride to a different island, and I didn't have the doors fitted up properly either (I had the hinges, but they hadn't been painted or fitted). The solution? Fit everything back loosely and plastic wrap the whole car!

My Datsun loving flatmate very kindly helped me do this and drove the whole way - btw, the tow car in these pics is a diesel R30 Skyline wagon, with the LD20, so even my tow car has a L series! Actually I used to own a L26 powered Datsun 260C (Cedric) sedan that I had already used to haul my engine and gearbox and interior back a few months earlier. The boot (trunk to you) was so huge that even with a LPG tank I could easily fit my L20B and 2x 5 speeds in!

Late night before the ferry ride filling the car with my parts and tools and wrapping the body:

Actually here are some better pics from before the wrapping - I haven't edited the previous post because I'm trying to get all this posted before I go to bed! These ones were taken using an actual camera (thanks Mum!)

I pretty much got blinded that day! You may notice the gold zinc plated door strikers - I have a friend that does that for a job, and his prices are very cheap, so I gave him a whole bucket of stuff to do :-)

Here are a couple of pics of this on the ferry. Once we arrived in Christchurch I had a very grey 1600 thanks to the mighty LD20 smoking so much!

About the tape: We discovered not long after leaving my parents' place that the plastic wrapping tends to flap about and generally unwrap itself when towing at open road speeds. We ended up having to stop and buy every roll of red and blue "100mph tape" that the closest petrol station had, then periodically stop and add more tape as more plastic wrap came undone. This was a source of great amusement to onlookers every time we had to do it.

I pretty much did nothing for another year or so except collect parts (not pictured) and work on other cars. I recently had to move again, and now have no storage for the 1600, so it seemed like the ideal time to get more work done. Although painted on the outside, the doors still aren't fitted and there were still some bodywork issues. These are being addressed now by another Datsun owner (being in the NZ Datsun club helps a lot!) who has very high standards and understands that it's not 1985 anymore and these cars are actually worth doing a decent job on.

First was the boot floor - what looked like a tiny rust hole expanded a lot once we did some digging. This was patched very tidily and seam sealed before spraying with paintable stoneguard and black paint in the entire boot area.

Another bi-annual update.. Things got in the way again, I bought a house, got married etc.

I built a rotisserie because I just couldn't tolerate scraping underseal and repainting while on my back and getting covered with the stuff. Finally finished stripping all the old underseal, found a few more patches of rust so cut out and welded in new metal. Painted the underside.

In March my panel guy will underseal and paint the interior. Then I'll flip it back over and put crossmembers back in so that he can fit the doors.

Long time between updates! My new panel guy (another NZDatsun member) came around and did some more - patched a hole in the rear corner that i didn't think was possible to do nicely. It's amazing how you can think you know how to do something, i.e. patch a hole and then you watch a pro do it and realise how far you have to go.

So it's got a nice dose of seam sealer on all the joins and repairs now.

Followed by underseal - at the front it's a Wurth paintable underseal that will be painted over in the body colour.

Also picked up my diff - this has been in the build for a while, 4.11:! R200 CLSD with all new Nissan bearings and seals and Nismo clutch packs, with an extra clutch per side. My diff guy (also an NZDatsun member) set the breakaway torque at 60ft lb.

Also started clearancing my crossmember for the R200. Here's an empty housing I'm using to mock up, along with my Maddat moustache bar. As you can see I've ground the ears off this crossmember already in preparation for the Datsport adjustment kit. The 4" pipe looks quite large, I'll have to check it won't interfere with the control arm mounts.

Make sure the 4" pipe is no thicker than the parent metal on the Xmember, A section of 4" exhaust tube is sufficient.

Good progress.
You may find that 60 lbs break away on the diff is a bit high. The factory setting is around 35 - 40, which is a good range. At 60 lbs your diff will act pretty much locked most of the time, especially if you run street tires.

Regarding the X member pipe, I have a 3 3/4" OD pipe in mine and it's pretty darn big! I questioned rigidity, but after 8 years it seems to be fine.

Thanks for the update.
