IMHO the best way to go is a single 14 or 16" spal fan if you have the room.
Also look at doing a shroud like bertvorgon mentioned
2 x 12" spal fans is another option.

The radiator is only 18 inches across so if I went dual the biggest I could go would be 8.5. I'm thinking 14 with a shroud. I just don't have the necessary tools to build one.....

You can do this quite easily, as it looks like you have a pretty square opening.

I would truck on down to your local Home Depot or equivalent, they usually have rolls of aluminum, 6" wide, for edging roofing, etc.. Grab a pair of sheet metal cutters, or air craft snips ( for straight cuts).

Then, you can make a card board template of the shapes you need, with the ends left a hair longer, to be bent over at a right angle to attache to the next peice. You can just bolt them together, either build some tabs to mount to the rad support, or, leave a metal tab on the aluminum sheet. Then, when installed, you can seal the edges carefully with some black duct tape.

This would at least do you till you could get some nice sheet aluminum, keep you patterns, then you could get a sheet metal shop to use their shear to cut them out for you. Here is a quick link back to my project to help with some ideas.

I have looked at your project there bert a few times, but with my application I can not build it in front of the radiator that way due to my intercooler being basically butted right up against the radiator. I was thinking something more along the lines of this.

Obviosuly mine would not protrude out as much but just to be able to cover the entire back side of the radiator and draw it through the fan.

It doesn't sound like you have the room necessary for a shroud like the one you picture. A flat version that covers the back of the radiator and mounts the fan will likely kill flow through the radiator. The pictured shroud is 6" deep or so to avoid this, but at a cost of that space.

Keith's suggestion regarding covering up between your radiator and the radiator support is because air that should go through your radiator and cool it instead flows out of that space between. Path of least resistance.

That isn't going to help a post-autocross cool down at idle, but around town it'll make a big difference. We're headed toward summer, and I don't need to tell you about summer temps in LV.

Normal driving conditions are really not my issue. It was more just the abuse the the AutoX placed on the cooling system. I'm really debating on moving the engine back. The only things I would have to modify are the Tranny mount which would be easy enough to do. And the drive shaft I will prob have to take back in to get shortened more.

You should not have problems at the solo. You still need to get the air to go through the rad, evermore so when beating on it, at solo speeds you should have enough air to cool it.

I would leave my fans running when I came in, as to help with heat soak, and to cycle the water in the rad.
After idling for a minute, shut the motor down, fans running, re-fire after a few minutes and the cooler water in the rad can cycle through the block, you can repeat that a few times, and, depending on how many cars in front of you....I used to be able to hit my next run with water back to almost thermostat temp.

I will be taking you up on this one. Should I build my mock out of card board and bring it down to you?

Bert, Im going to take some more detailed pictures of my set up. May b with that you can help me design a shroud that would be best. Prob wont happen till next week because Im going out to SF tonight for the weekend.

I had time to snap a few pics.

How my intercooler is mounted with no Rad in.

And a view of how little of room I have to work with.

Keith will have better pictures to show. Here's one from Byron showing the top air guide/duct he made:

Ahhh...I see the problem now, but, I guess I cannot comment on it really, I will leave that to those that run the same thing.

We are not big fans here ( Specialty) ( hey, that's almost a pun) of the inter cooler blocking the radiator. Likely ok out on the Great Rolling Dyno, where air flow is up all the time, but........

i see from the angle that the top of the radiator is out in the air, that is what you need to shroud in, which, is pretty much blocked by the inter cooler filling the opening, so you have no air able to go through the top part of the rad, there for you have lost some reasonable surface area.

I don't think the head gasket blew because it got hot. Normal running temp for an SR is 190f and I think the spiking to 220 was likely a result of low fluid after the head gasket went. Had you ever experienced overheating before this event?

Kid,
I was going to bring mine out and watch the auto x but didn't. When u are ready for an alignment let me know my friend owns a shop in town and he aligns a lot of the auto x cars, he was one of announcers at that event. He has the silver hatch back. Well let me know when you r ready.
