Did the drivers side inner rear quarter panel today.

Started with this after removing the wheel arch section and the top brace.

Rear section, I didn't spend too much trying to make this look pretty as you can't see it and this car needs to be on the road this year.

Made some quick changes to the inner wheel arch, had to remake and reweld in a section as it wasn't quite meeting the outer panel.

Cleaned up the cut on the quarter panel.

Matching the panels.

ImageGAS1600_019_04 by Garvice, on Flickr

Spot welded (planished as I went)

Stitch welded (kept planishing as I went)

ImageGAS1600_019_07 by Garvice, on Flickr

Ground and a bit more planishing. Might have planished a little too much on the weld before grinding as the weld was pushed into the panel a little.

Will need to do a little work on the wheel arch.

Thanks Miguel. While I am happy with the level of panels that I have been able to create, every time I look at them I see something else I don't like. But, seeing as I am building this car as a quick build, I am doing my best to not go back and redo the panels too much. I will just use a bit of filler to make the panels straighter.

I have been pretty slack with updating this thread so this will be in two parts. This post is from 4/5 May.

It worked fantastic to keep all the dust in and away from the rest of the shed. I do have to come up with a different sandblaster if I do it again though, I was using the suction gun from my cupboard but it just uses far too much air.

Re: GAS 1600

This post is from today.

The car had been hit in the drivers front corner and the previous repair was rather dodgy. So I started with a fair bit of panel beating before unpicking the front end and starting over. I didn't get many good photos of the damage, but it was wrinkled a bit.

ImageGAS1600_020_04 by Garvice, on Flickr

ImageGAS1600_020_05 by Garvice, on Flickr

ImageGAS1600_021_01 by Garvice, on Flickr

I started by cutting off the top outside support so that I could beat the panel back into shape a bit.

ImageGAS1600_021_02 by Garvice, on Flickr

Support needed a bit of work too.

ImageGAS1600_021_03 by Garvice, on Flickr

ImageGAS1600_021_04 by Garvice, on Flickr

Then after some panel beating I unpicked the front end.
ImageGAS1600_021_05 by Garvice, on Flickr

Started with a rough shape and went from there.
ImageGAS1600_021_06 by Garvice, on Flickr

Added some detail (you will notice the detail is a bit crooked, I fixed that later on).
ImageGAS1600_021_07 by Garvice, on Flickr

ImageGAS1600_021_08 by Garvice, on Flickr

Decided the support need to be unpicked and rebuilt too. Look how many spot welds they used in the factory! Or maybe that was from the repair, either way, someone didn't want this to come apart.
ImageGAS1600_021_09 by Garvice, on Flickr

ImageGAS1600_021_10 by Garvice, on Flickr

Bit more detail.
ImageGAS1600_021_11 by Garvice, on Flickr

Underneath the upper support needed some help so I got out my metal filler (mig welder) and went to town.
ImageGAS1600_021_12 by Garvice, on Flickr

Bit better looking.
ImageGAS1600_021_13 by Garvice, on Flickr

Made a new support.
ImageGAS1600_021_14 by Garvice, on Flickr

ImageGAS1600_021_15 by Garvice, on Flickr

ImageGAS1600_021_16 by Garvice, on Flickr

Support in and a quick prime before welding the new panel in.
ImageGAS1600_021_17 by Garvice, on Flickr

Panel welded in.
ImageGAS1600_021_18 by Garvice, on Flickr

Needed to make a patch for the bottom.
ImageGAS1600_021_19 by Garvice, on Flickr

And welds ground down.
ImageGAS1600_021_20 by Garvice, on Flickr

I purposely left the radiator opening unfinished as I don't know the size of the radiator I will be using yet. I took lots of photos of the process, so hopefully I have enough to do a right up of how I did the panel in the metal forming thread.

Your dedication to the sheet metal repairs continue to amaze me; nice work. And thanks again for posting the process as you go.

Finished the flange off.

Bought some guards and a bonnet off a local forum member. This was the first real purchase for the car.
ImageGAS1600_023_09 by Garvice, on Flickr

ImageGAS1600_023_10 by Garvice, on Flickr

Guards need some work at the bottom and the left one needs a little panel beating. Also need to panel beat the car a bit to get the gaps better. But much better then what I had.

Previous guards.

Small patch, decided I didn't need the second wiper hole, especially since the factory design with steel blanking sheet is what made it rust..

Minor update.
Well I think I have finished the engine bay now (other then front valence).

Filled a few holes.

Also filled a few holes on the sides but didn't take photos. They looked like holes, now they look like flat steel. Got the picture?

In regards to working on the sheet metal, sometimes I am my own worst enemy.
This is what I had done last week with the front driver's radiator support.
ImageGAS1600_025_05 by Garvice, on Flickr

It needed a little piece at the front which I had cut off. Instead I decided to replace the hole section. HA.

Stupidly I forgot to paint the underside. Might have to seam seal it or something.

Welded in the rear passenger bottom quarter panel that I had bought. This represents the last large rust repair panel on the body section of the car. Few small sections to touch up and the removable panels to work on, but for the actual body, this is pretty much it.

Camera broke so was using phone to take photos, consequentially I didn't take any photos of the work completed on the inside panel.

Started with this
