I got my narrow band AFR meter wired back up. It will have to suffice untill I can afford a wide band unit. It works OK, I bought it back when this was really all there was without spending thousands for a wide band. Now the wide bands are cheap. It does a fair job of showing your AFR under a load and it will show you when you've run the fuel system to it's max and your going lean.

The turbo sits really close to the steeing gear. The plastic vent broke when I had the gear out of the car and I replaced it with a pipe plug. The first few times I drove the car it seemed to be working OK, but when I got the turbo hot it started forcing oil out of the adjuster plug. I knew was going to need a vent and I remembered that Spicer uses a metal vent on thier heavy duty axles. We had one at work and it was a perfect fit. I drove the car around today for half an hour or so and its seems to work. The Spicer part number is A1199R4048 and is only a few bucks.

When I had the car apart I rebuilt the wiper transmission, but I never bought any new boots to go over the output shafts. When I was a the Pick-N-Pull I noticed the the Nissan D21 pick-ups had what looked to be the correct boot. The D21 has two different length boots on either side and I took the short ones. They are a perfect fit and they were free. I'm a cheep ass so free is the perfect price for me.

I haven't posted any updates here for a while, so here we go. I thought I would post some pics of my suspension set up. The front end has 280ZX struts and brakes with coil overs, a bump steer spacer, Energy Suspension control arm bushings and EE idler arm bushings and T/C kit. It has 200 lbs springs and I used the stock dampers with 15 wt. motorcycle fork oil. The sway bar is 7/8 dia. bar from some larger Datsun model like a 910. I can't remember exactly which car it came from, I put it on 20 years ago. The sway bar mounts got moved slightly forward to get the bar to clear the engines front sump.

The rear suspension uses 280ZX control arms and brakes with GAB coilovers from a Subaru Legacy wagon. I built a Pendultimate adjustable rear crossmember with custom pick up points and brackets to fix the geometry trouble with the 280ZX control arms. The crossmember is mounted in poly bushings and has a larger exhaust through hole for 3" tubing.

My transmission had some horrific bearing noise and needed to be rebuilt. My dad suggested a guy who had done some trans. work for him before with good results. I contacted the guy and he said he could do it in two weeks. I pulled the trans and called him two weeks later. He told me it would be two more weeks untill he could get to it. This wasn't going to work for me as Canby was quickly approaching and I wanted to take my car. I had never rebuilt a trany before but I thought I would give it a try. I bought a bearing and syncro kit from a local rebuilder and a small press off of Craigslist. It wasn't that hard to rebuild. I used a factory service manual for a 720, which uses the same trany, and I just laid every piece that came off of the shafts in order on my work bench and put it back together in the same sequence. Its amazing how much queiter it is, especially with no interior in the car.

I wanted to install a new pilot bushing so I pulled the old one and drove in the new one. I didn' want to have to pull the clutch and flywheel to install the bushing so I made a bushing installer out of a rear control arm bolt on my lathe.

I've been trying to sort out some runability issues. The first one is a hard starting and uneven idle problem. I've checked the TPS, tested the coolant sensor, cleaned out the IAC valve, and tested the fuel pressure with no results. The IAC valve appears to be a Japan only thing and I have no idea how to test it. I tried blocking it off but it closes off to much air from the idle circuit and the car won't idle. I'm trying to fiquire out a way to adapt a different IAC valve from some other Nissan.

The car was running rich at idle and as I accelerated. I adjusted the airflow meter and got it to the right AFR according to my narrow band AFR gauge. The engine would pull hard but as soon as the RPM started to build it would run out of fuel at 5 lbs of boost and I would have to back out of the thottle. I thought maybe the fuel pump was bad but it tested good. I never had this problem with the Z18 bottom end but the Z22 bottom end is pulling way more air and the injectors were maxed out. I bought a set of Ford SVO 2.3L turbo injectors rated at 370cc off of Ebay for $50. This is a common upgrade for the 280ZX turbo guys. It just takes a couple of simple mods and swaping over the harware from the stock injectors to make them fit. I installed the injectors and took the car out for a test drive. Holy shit what a difference. The engine pulls really hard and has plenty of fuel. It was idling a little rich but I was able to tune it out with the air bypass screw on the airflow meter. Its a little rich at cruise, but I should be able to adjust it by tightening up the spring on the AFM door.

I had to trim off the plastic on top of the injectors so I could clamp the feed hose to to them.
