The first ones are the ones I bought. https://www.amazon.ca/gp/aw/d/B019JCPTB ... AKE7YYRRPE
I got them on special for $54 each. For the price even at $68 each they are hard to beat.

Re: 2.3L of fun
Well I got the new diff installed. It was pretty easy to get in. I got new stubs for the Subaru R180 CLSD.
They did not come with the press in bolts or the dust shields. They dust shields were just attached with 2 small welds each and came off really easily. The bolts easily pushed out with my little Arbor press.
5 minutes later they were in the new stubs.

I got a nice Billet high capacity cover for the R180
It comes with 2 drain plugs with magnets in them. The magnets are not very well attached so I epoxied them in.

Re: 2.3L of fun
I epoxied the dust sheilds onto the axle stubs. They fit into the diff very well. There is no play in them at all.
I installed this vent tube from a R180 out of a pickup. It presses in and it looks like it will let less oil up than simply putting in a barbed fitting tapped into the vent hole. My vent hose going to the catch can in my trunk fits perfectly.
I also picked up some new nylock nuts for everything under the car. It cost $4 to replace the tired 48 year old ones.

Re: 2.3L of fun
The diff went in very easily without the cover on.
The Subaru diff came with this baffel that installs between the cover and the diff. It blocks oil from hitting right on the vent.
The cover went on easily. The top 2 bolts took a bit of patience to get in but they were not hard.
I switched from the studs to bolts.
It looks a lot neater back there now.
While I was in there I played with my drive shaft angles. I moved the back of the diff down close to an inch and I moved the cross member down about 1/2 an inch. I need to get some proper washers for the cross member but with it where I left it my measured angles were 3.4 at the transmission, 3.4 at the diff and 3.5 on the drive shaft. I think that is about as good as it gets.If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?

Fun with Diffs
So I have been playing around with diff a bit lately. The Subaru R180 CLSD is in the car now with 4.44 gears. It has less play in it then the R160 CLSD ever did. I also bought a set of 4.6 gears thinking I would put them into the Subaru case with the CLSD but I made a discovery about R180's. The newer R180's with a K cast into the housing have the same size housing and all the same dimensions inside except for one. The ID of the ring gear on the Datsun R180's from the skyline and 240Z is 110mm. On the newer R180's the ID of the ring gear is 115mm. This sent me deep into the internet hole looking at LSD's. For the 115mm ring gear there are lots of options. The best seems to be the OS Giken, everyone who has one loves it and has nothing good to say. Then there is the Cusco, Quaif and a couple of other random ones. For the 110mm Ring gear the options really get narrowed down. There is the Datsun Motorsports one that is almost impossible to find and goes for a silly price now($4k+) IF you can find one. Then there is the Cusco and the Quaife. I'm sure there are other ones out there but I am mainly looking at ones I can find for sale now. I am thinking I may end up going with the Cusco CLSD .
https://www.cusco.co.jp/en/catalog/pdf_ ... e_lsd.html
The Quaife does not have very good reviews and the fact that it operates like an open diff if one wheel lifts or the fact that it never 100% locks does not make it something I would want.
Has anyone used the Cusco? Are there any other ones out there I should look at?

Re: 2.3L of fun
I guess that means no one has used one. They would appear to be the only company out there making one for the Datsun R180 so it would appear my decision is made. Cusco is doing another run of them in January so I will grab one and build up the diff then. As the rainy season is upon us again I think I am going to work on finding some rattles and finally get a new windshield. I borrowed an engraver that vibrates like crazy and holding the casing of it on a panel really bring out the rattles. I think it will be a good way to find and eliminate some noise from my car.

Re: 2.3L of fun
So aren't the K housing R180's in the 80's 200sx? The STI K R180 just has a different spline count right?

Re: 2.3L of fun
It is the ring gear size and the spline count that are different. The ring gear in the K housings are 115mm and the older ones from the 240z is 110mm. The only 4.6 gears I have seen are the 110mm.

Re: 2.3L of fun
I am thinking I may do both. My ears hurt after a long drive unless I am wearing my headset.

Re: 2.3L of fun
noise fatigue is draining. the 69 needs some sludge on the wheel wells.

Project quiet car
Well I started this week on quieting down the interior of my car. I pulled everything but the dash from the interior and cleaned out the last bit of the factory sound deadening. I happy I decided to take it out as there was a bunch of surface rust in the rear under-seat area. I cleaned it all out then primed it and cleaned and de-greased the rest of the floor and the firewall.
I am using a paint on sound deadening.
http://store.secondskinaudio.com/spectr ... -1-gallon/
It comes in a 1 gallon pail with a small bottle of activator. When you open the pail it is about the consistency of paint. The activator allows you to change the viscosity to whatever you want up to about the consistency of playdouh. I used a 500ml yogurt container and added 3 capfulls (8-10ml) of the activator and got the consistency of thick pudding. 1.5 yogurt containers went on really easily with a paint brush. It doesn't run or mover when you put it on and I did the floor, firewall and wheel wells front and back with that much. It went on around 1.5mm thick. It says that it has very little smell on the website and that you can put it on without a mask. They are right. It has the smell of a room that was painted the day before with no VOC paint. Cleanup was super easy. Where I got it on my skin I only needed to rub it with a bit of water and it came right off. I can tell already that the panels have been deadened quite a bit. So far I have used less than 1/4 of the pail. It is also light, when dry the entire pail adds only 8lb to your car. I am looking forward to seeing how much this will quiet my car down. I have a few other things I am going to be doing along with the Spectrum Sludge, hopefully I can get the car to a point where I can talk to my passenger instead of having to yell.

I am very interested in how the sludge turns out for you! Looking forward to a report.
Better put a tall diff back in!...funwithmonkeys wrote: I have a few other things I am going to be doing along with the Spectrum Sludge, hopefully I can get the car to a point where I can talk to my passenger instead of having to yell.

Re: 2.3L of fun
I have put on quite a bit of the Spectrum Sludge now and it makes a huge difference. Tapping on anything just results in a dull thud. It would be a nicer finish if you used the spray on one but that was not really an option. You can see the brush strokes on it as I did it. I may try to add another layer or two without any activator in it so I goes on a bit smoother. I don't mind it being rough though. It's not like this is a show car.
Picked up the new Cusco LSD today also. It looks really nice and can be set for either 1.5 way or 2 way. The ring gear fits on nice with no movement once it is on there. Now I just need to get it assembled.
For the rear firewall I added a layer of Second Skin Luxury Liner. It is a closed cell foam with a rubber front layer.
I also added the Luxury Liner under the panel I had on the rear deck and covered it in carpet. Combined all of these should result in a significantly quieter car. Total weight of everything I added was 41lb.Picked up the new Cusco LSD today also. It looks really nice and can be set for either 1.5 way or 2 way.
