Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
The latest work looks awesome. And thanks for the sender reply - I may use that one if I build another tank. I used a Stewart-Warner GM sender and flipped the lever, but it apparently doesn't work that well.

Well I suppose I should be mildly embarrased about this, but it's been WAY too long to get this project started again. As usual a string of awesome Z's (and their begging insistent owners) and a full early stock 71 restoration got in the way, and the poor 510 got put on the back burner.
Well, it's time has come and I'm not stopping until its finished. Really. Honest. For sure. Probably. It's back in the shop and the ideas and dreams are flowing again. Here we go, hang on!

Good to see you back Jim! Post a few pictures so we can see where your 510 is at.
I had the opportunity to see his 71 240 restoration, it was a flashback in time. Well done!

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Thanks for the kind worlds Jim. I was happy with the outcome as is the new owner.
The 510 needs three major areas to complete. The interior, wiring and trim. The body is done and driveline is in.
Here is how she sits.
First get the rear vents installed on the C pillar, then new vinyl trim applied to the inside of the A,B and C pillars, then put the glass back in.

Wow it's looking really good and super close to being done too. Like your color selection.

I'm intrigued by your heater setup. Looks like you could tackle an Alberta winter with no problem! (I'm doubting you're actually going to DO that though...)
What's the heater from? Or-- are we maybe seeing an AC unit as well?

The unit is a Vintage air A/C, heat and defrost unit. Should handle anything I decide to take on with this car. Including winter should I decide to do that. I'm getting tired of "should I take it out today or not? Oh dear, how's the weather?" Enough of that crap. I sealed this thing like a tomb.
Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Had a busy week. Have all the new vinyl on the A B and C pillars, and around the bottom of the rear window. I'm dying it all the same, SEM "Phantom White" including the head liner. Installing vinyl trim upholstery in general is an acquired taste, but thanks to a wonderful brush on contact cement called "helmiprene 4510" it was really pretty easy once you get a method down. Spray contact is tricky as it sprays everywhere, requiring masking and care. Brush on is SO much easier. Even used it for the door weatherstripping.
Got the weatherstrip on the doors, both the "welt and bulb" type on the body pinch weld ala Z (but smaller bulb), as well as the stock stuff around the doors. These doors are going to seal like a new car. Also installed new glass run channel. There will be NO place for wind to whistle on this baby. I'll try to get the part number for the bulb style welting from McMaster Carr for the rest of you. You could use just it and skip the door weatherstrip and be just fine. It touches all the way around.
Finally, today mounted a new defrost grid on the rear window. I went with "Frost Fighter". Went on real well. Well made. Very glad I had the thing out. Would be a real challenge from the back seat.

Found the part number for the pinch weld weatherstrip that I used.

I might be tempted to try the 1120a211, which is the same but fits a 1/8" pinch weld. There are a couple of places where there are a couple of layers of vinyl wrapped around the pinch weld where the total width gets a bit tight for the 1/16" stuff, like near the headliner/B pillar top corners and such. Overall, the bulb on this stuff touches the door 100% of the way around, making it a viable alternative to the grumpy glue on on-door weatherstrip.

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Is it any harder to shut the door with that welting?
Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
You can't even tell there is any difference. The bulb just touches the door, maybe deforming its 3/8" bulb diameter by MAYBE 50%. It's a very direct touch, its not getting pinched in the door/jamb area. The bulb is quite soft.
Now I haven't driven the car yet, so I can't speak about the quality of the air seal or noise level, or if the bulb needs to be a bit bigger to seal "better", 1/2" bulb would be the absolute max you'd need. 7/16" is likely all that would ever be required if the 3/8" I'm using turns out to be not quite tight enough.
Right now since I've added the stock weatherstrip as well, and it's new and all "sticky outee", it does drag in the opening as the door is closed, and adds to the door closing force required, but I played lots with just the pinch weld stuff before I put the stock stuff on, and it closed with a finger.

you may find lots of road spray collecting on the sills if the outer glue on seal is absent

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Update day.
Today's report is about door cards. I recently found a cheap source for door card mounting clips and receiver clips for 240z, and as I've come to learn, 510's as well! How handy. Thought I'd share.
They are Au-ve-co parts, 13206 (cups) and 13173 (clips). I bought them from clipsandfasteners.com
Kinda pricey though, 2 or 3 cents each.....
The clips seem like they would be really good grabbers in the holes even without the rubber cups.
Here is a pic of some oldies and some newbies.
