Afternoon Keith! I remember those days fondly. Reaching down the side of a hot 13b to swap plugs all the time.

Just called the engine builder who's 'getting the block on the stand' as we speak so hopefully I'll have a full report from him soon. Fingers crossed.

ha...yup...lots of toasty body parts. We used to have a few rotary cars...we made sure NOT to pit next to them...Does the word NOISY come to mind......

And environmentally unfriendly?

In the Westwood days when I was involved with a team, we once got pitted next to Barry’s Tekam RX7 – a true peripheral port 13B. When it ran, we couldn’t breath, and our eyes watered it was so bad. I remember washing my clothes once, and it not being enough!
But you live and learn, from that point on we looked at who was pitted where before choosing our spot…

I've removed the oil metering pump and run all mine on pre mix, it stings the eyes a bit.

Still no news from the engine builder, maybe he's just dumped it all in a skip out back.

Morning Randy,

Seeing as you have been a rotary and race guy, you will enjoy this. A 3 rotor RX7 at our local race track. Took me a little bit to get him lined up, as we had similar hp. If I remember correctly, they dynoed it at just over 300.

That's okay, I don't mind at all. Keeps bumping me to the top and hopefully I'll get more views, help and advice.

So, engine builder says the block is junk. Piston 2 and 3 were also rubbing, but I guess they run hotter due to their location, the rings have melted into the pistons. Excuse the poor quality photo:

So now on the hunt for an L18.

Unless the block is cracked, it can be bored over up to 2mm without much concern.

I bored an L16 (from 83mm to 86mm) and used an L18 crank for a race engine. Rules specifically went by external markings on the engine. It was assumed you were going to oversize it.

It's currently 89mm Dave. I don't think it can go any bigger than that?
There is a Datsun 510 (LHD US Import) race car in the UK, the owner lives about 20 miles from me, I've spoken to him today, he is going to sell me a spare L18 block so hopefully it'l be back on track soon. I wasn't expecting to spend this much on the engine so it'll put the body work repairs back a bit. But at least it'll be as good as it can be once done.

While the pictures are fuzzy, if the side of the piston and ring land(s) have squished the rings, I do
wonder if it was detonating?

Likely a good tool for you down the pipe is to get a good wide band A/F meter, for your tuning.

My Toyota AE86 had the same sort of failure at end of life

I'll take better pictures when I get over there next. It's all going in the bin now anyway, or maybe get turned into some garage furniture/art.
A replacement has been found

Normal service will resume shortly, I'm waiting for the builder to get back to me with what he's going to do to the replacement block and what spec pistons he wants to run.
What AFR / wideband would you recommend?
