2 Door 510, S15 conversion
Here's a project I'm working on.
Plans for the car are a family friendly cruiser with the ability to be taken to the track and driven hard. To do this, I'll be using a donor S15 Silvia and using the entire front and rear suspension assemblies including the cross members. As well as an SR20det conversion. I'll also be hand fabricating some flares from steel sheet to house the extra track.
The car was in really good original condition. The only repair on the car was a large dent in the guard, that had screws used to half pull it out. There was some minor rust in some of the usual places, bottom of the guards and doors, the bottom of the quarters and along the bottom of the beaver. There was also some on the drivers foot well and the spare wheel well.

Wow, this is shaping up to be an amazing build - all the best with it!
Definitely looking forward to progress with the S15 chassis / suspension conversion - looking at the quality of the body work being done, it should be great.

Yes, it's getting a rhd conversion. I'm off this morning to pick up the donor S15.
I'm planning on doing some bracing to the shell. Are there any well known trick that you guys do to the 510 that will help stiffen it up?
Planning to
- gusset the inside and outside of the front rails where they meet the firewall.
- weld some plates to tie in the front strut towers to the rails and strengthen the area a bit more.
- brace the a piller to the upper inner guard support rail.
- brace the tips if the towers to the firewall
- gusset the bottom of the a and b pillars to the sill with plates.
- a few gusset plates around the rear bulkhead.
- I'll be putting the s15 strut tops in, as well as bracing the tops to the rear bulkhead and across to each tower top.
- cross bracing under the floor between each tower for rear cradle mounting and tieing this in with the rear lower rails that come up from the cabin floor.
- a brace from the original spring upper support plate to the rear cross brace I'm installing to help stiffen the rear end.
- some plate work and mounting point construction for the front mounts of the rear cradle.
- stitch welding the critical structural areas of the shell.ie, pillars, rails, sills, firewall and rear bulkhead, all suspension point reinforcing plates, rad support etc.

That is some killer sheet metal work!
So how are you going to fit the rear suspension and retain a rear seat? Are you going to build a custom rear sub frame? Also with the front suspension are you going to narrow it? Or is that why are going to run flares?

The rear suspension is going in as a standard s15 setup. The rear cradle is remaining standard, I have chopped a small section out of the rear of the lower seat panel on the floor, to clear the front of the cradle. But other than that, it appears like it's a pretty straight forward install and yes, we will be running a rear seat.
The front and rear width will stay standard and we will get wheels with a fair whack of positive offset, then fabricate the flares to fit. We're now going a 16x7 on the front and 16x8 on the rear.

How much wider is the S14 and S15 rear suspension from one mounting flange to the other?

Nah, we got the car locally and it was an australian delivered car. It'd probably cost more in shipping to get a S15 here compared to buying a write off locally.

The 510 was bought locally, but it is originally from the U.S.
I've built and restored a lot of cars, but this was by far the most unmolested and original car I've come across for it's age.
