As part of the brake system overhaul, I'm replacing the brake master cylinder with a rebuilt OEM 3/4" unit from my parts stash. The backing plate had a bit of rust, so I used this opportunity to try out Evapo-rust. 12 hours of soaking and not a trace of rust. Pretty sweet. (Can I soak the entire car :D )

I've only used vinegar on electrical components with surface rust. This rust was a lot more "crusty" so I decided to give this product a shot. I still need to figure out a good short term solution for the rust in other locations. (Like the trunk/rear fender seems) Might try yo clean up as much as I can in those locations and switch to a rust converter product like zero-rust.

Progress is still slow. I finished installing a new brake master cylinder (glad I kept some of my stock parts) and new hard lines to the splitter. Started working on restoring the driver's rear brakes, but was unable to remove the old brake drum. Used lots of rust penetration fluid but unfortunately the threads on the bolt holes used to push the drums off stripped :( Gotta figure out another way of getting them off.

Figured I'd post an update when I made more progress, but I've been sidelined working on getting Randy York's Orange KA24E (Single-cam) 510 buttoned up before putting it up for auction. The only real progress I've made on the blue barn find 510 was finally getting the title/licensing straightened out with the DMV.

After 3 trips to the DMV and several back and forth mailings of documents and additional fees (cuz this year's registration was due) I finally managed to receive the title in my name and new tags to use on the original blue California plates!

Once Randy's 510 is out of the garage and off to its new home I'll start working on this car again. I've decided to pull the engine/tranny out of the car due to issues with the clutch and ongoing struggles with removing the front cover. Might as well do a tear down of the engine :D

Another quick update. I've run into some issues with broken bolts on the front cover of the original motor. I tried removing the front cover, but the crank pulley won't budge. I'm going to take the original motor out and rebuilt it at a later time. In the mean time I went up and grabbed an L18SSS motor (with SUs and 5-speed) from a longtime 510 buddy in Ojai. (Which he just removed for his own KA swap)

I'm doing some minor clean up on the motor and will swap it in after Thanksgiving. Hoping to be able to take the car out on its own power before the end of the year.
