Re: Noob build
Well, it was painful but the parts were stripped followed by epoxy and high build primer. Next days off we'll get to body work..
Re: Noob build
very nice, always satisfying when things become the same color , even if it is only primer.
Progress is slow, but it is progress non the less.
Re: Noob build
Thank you and absolutely, looks a lot closer to being done. It shouldn't be too much body work, hope to have it all painted by the end of November. I'll need more light and a better way to hold the panels in place for topcoating though - more bush league engineering to come.
Re: Noob build
Well, it's done. Paint turned out really well except a few minor clearcoat issues on the gas flap and one of the window frames. Starting to assemble now and should hopefully get it inspected by mid-January at the latest.

Re: Noob build
Looking very very nice. Are planning to cut and polish the clear coat?
Re: Noob build
For sure, I want to get it inspected first so it's insured and then I'll get on with that. I've never done it before so I'm going to get some help on it.greenthumb wrote: ↑05 Dec 2018 07:10 Looking very very nice. Are planning to cut and polish the clear coat?
Re: Noob build
Been a while... progess didn't go as quickly as I'd hope over the holidays. But the doors are now loaded, power door locks installed, sub box carpeted and bolted down, made a shelf for the rear speakers screwed around with more wiring.
Of course the car won't start again, no spark. This time there's no power at the coil, I'm getting the primary ignition circuit code and the coolant temp sensor code. Will check the grounds but I'm thinking it's a crank angle sensor since it happens intermittently.
This pic is from before I installed the bracket to support the top of the solenoid

Re: Noob build
Slow and steady wins the race... not in this case. All the details take forever but it's very close. A couple of final touches are still needed - custom heater control panel and then the dash can go back together. Otherwise it's fully running & driving, will aim to have it inspected mid May.
Re: Noob build
A few items that happened:
Made a small console to hold the cell phone and a drink.
had to modify the glovebox to run the duct tube behind it.
Door panels went back on, doors hung.
Tried some wet sanding and polishing... didn't go picture perfect but that's why I started on the underside of the trunk lid

Re: Noob build
Almost forgot:
Back seat and speaker rack is done:
Current state of the dash... although the switches are all wired. That's dimmer, rear defrost, hazard (from 2000 Celica), horn, heated seat, door lock (GM switch - the least ugly I could find that would work), 12V out and heat pass seat. Lights/turn signals and wiper switch are all S13 240SX.
Also - I can't get the intermittent wiper to work at all, it's driving me nuts. Triple checked the wiring and nothing. Not sure if the time control module needs other inputs than given in the FSM for the 240SX. Any input is much appreciated.

Getting closer all the time.
Was the crank trigger the engine issue with the ignition not working?
Heated seats! Now there's an option you don't see often added into a 510.
Question - did you use some sort of isolation of the 0 gauge power wire between the battery and the starter, so that it's only energized when starting and have a second, fused smaller feed wire between the cars harness and the battery? Or does the cable have continuous power to the starter from the battery?
I look forward to the updates, stating to look nearly complete. The Bronze was a 4 year paint job, so I know how that goes.

Re: Noob build
Thanks Byron!
The car wasn't starting because of some weird stuff in the connection at the ECU. Once that was cleaned up there were no more error codes and she's running like a dream. The rough idle was a missed cap on the underside of the intake manifold causing a vacuum leak, aka not looking hard enough.
Heated seats and AC - I plan on driving her year round!
The cable has continuous power but I was thinking of adding a deadman switch or heavy duty relay as anti-theft. What are you thinking there? There is a separate wire that feeds the power distribution box which is mounted on the underside of the dash above the heater. This distributes power to everything but the starter.
Soon enough, trying to make the North Van show in August this year. The interior will be done next days off, then it's just inspection and modified collector plates.
Will keep the updates coming... you heading to the island this summer?

Re: Noob build
Nice work! you're getting very close. We started our projects around the same time, but you're way more active than I am. I'm about to dissasemble everything for bodywork/paint.
Got any details on your handbrake setup? I went thru the whole thread but I can't find anything.
Keep it up, I hope you will be able to enjoy the 510 this summer!

Re: Noob build
Hey man thank you and glad to hear you're getting to paint. That's a huge step!
The handbrake is all 280ZX with a few custom brackets. The rear 82-83 callipers are mounted with the Futofab adapter brackets. The handle is bolted to the floor. The only tricky part is holding down the lines. I made 4 brackets to hold the end of the cables, 2 close to the rear wheels that hold the the ends and the others are under the car. There is also a pivot bracket you need from the 280ZX that connects the single cable from the handle to the cable that goes to the back. I cut and fit it to the bottom and then welded it on, it sits above and in front of the diff. I'll take some pics when I'm back home to show you.
And thanks man, can't wait for it. Been almost three years and I'm eager to get this thing on the road.
