Fred's 73 2dr 510

Post by Fred_L-P »

Hey guys,

Quick recap from my intro: I'm from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. 26, mechanical engineer.
I just picked up my new project this morning.
73 2 doors shell with minimal rust. Most of it have been repaired already, but it's been sitting for 6 years. It's an unfinished project coming with a load of healthy spare parts and full interior.

The body is in a pretty rough shape, it'll need some love.
I found at least 6 different paint colors, so I will probably try to strip it back to bare metal instead of adding even more on top.
My plan is to put it back on the road with a fairly stock KA24DE as a summer daily driver within 2 to 3 years.
Keep in mind this is going to be my first ground up build.
I don't have an infinite budget or any special skills, but I'm patient, a quick learner and I can work with my hands.
So far I've only worked on my 2004 Ranger with the usual off-road suspension upgrades to run 35s.
I will obviously need guidance and advice from all of you guys!

Here it is, loaded and ready to go!

And back home

I will obviously need to reorganize my garage to make room to work around the car...

The shell already has fiberglass BRE front spoiler and fenders, 8 points bolted in roll cage and flipped front x-member (Previous owner also planed a KA24 build)

Of course I wanted to know the backstory of this little 510. I was happy to find out it was used as a rally car during the 70s and 80s (hence the 8 points roll cage).
Even more interesting, it was owned by a female rally driver from Montreal, Nicole Ouimet.

Here's a old article I found about her
Image

And a picture with the car
Image

It still rolls on the 13in aluminum rims you can see in the picture and I even have the quarter glass with the ''Pirelli world rally champion'' sticker.

Also found a video where you can see her and a bit of the car. (at 3:04)

The previous owner had this shell and 2 other 510's for parts. I have many many doors, trunks, hoods, trims, bumpers, etc...
Some in good shape, others are only good for the bin.

First step will be to sort everything out, keep all the good stuff and throw away anything unusable.

I will try my best to post updates on the project, but I tend to forget to take pictures when working.

Are there any members from the region of Montreal? I've never seen a single 510 on the road.

Cool to see old rally footage with 510's in them.

There is another tiny shot of the car at the very end of that clip.

Interesting that the car survived to this day. Most rally cars just faded into obscurity, got bent and rusted away.

Keep us posted.

WOW, cool stuff. Did you get the log book(s) with the car too? If not, GO BACK AND GET THEM. Good score and its nice to see you are realistic about the project time frame.

Unfortunately I don't have anything else regarding its past life. As far as I know I'm the third owner since it's been off duty, and it has never seen the road since. All this kind of stuff probably vanished a long time ago.

I got the car transferred to my name yesterday. It's officially mine!
Before working on the car I need to clean up the work space, build new storage shelves out of the way and a workbench.
I will take care of this on Friday.

Nice find, especially out in your area. Something about the wheels looks a bit off. The lug nut doesn't seem to be centered in the hole.

Those rims are referred to as the Uni-lug bolt pattern so they'll fit different cars - 4x114.3 and 4x100. They require a special offset washer, similar to these:

I didn't pay much attention to the wheels, never noticed this detail. Good to know, thanks!

Welcome to the Realm! Great story behind your find.

Trust me, there's other 510s out there. I recall reading a Montreal car forum a couple of years ago and there was an orange one similar to mine.

I went over a decade of being very active in Ottawa's Motorsport club and I never saw a 510. 5 years ago I finally got mine and suddenly there's 6 others examples that I know of in the region.

I'm curious, I'll try to dig the old threads. It would have to be at least 6 years old though, maybe 10.

Don't worry about the bin, you're not the first to tell me

The red one is KA24DE? I quickly checked your thread this morning. Nice work by the way, everything looks pretty damn clean. I love the Orange 510.
I thought it would be easy to find one out of a 240sx since they're pretty much all being replaced by sr20's, but harder than i thought.
They're all beaten up 200000kms +
With all the JDM shops around, sr20's are all over the place in a reasonable price range.
I know its a bit more complicated than the KA swap, but I'm thinking about it.
Anyway I'm only planing on buying the engine next year so I have plenty of time to think about it.

I have family in Gatineau. I'm not going too often, but next time if I can drop by I'd love it!

Sounds great Fritz and I and a couple other 510 guys here in Ottawa would be happy to see you any time. Make sure you look at the build for DADZSUN ( Fritz) as well he has a different twist on the KA swap way cool.

I'm not sure there was a build thread for your car here.... it may have beet Greg the guy you bough it from facebook page. I would check with him about the logbook when he bought it off of Kijiji I think the previous owner was advertising the log book. It certainly adds value to the car.

I bought it from a Simon near Quebec city. I don't know who owned it before that. I guess I can ask him. He already told me but I can't remember. Greg doesn't ring a bell.

Interesting it looks exactly like a car that was down near Burlington Ont. And the story of the guy prepping it for a KA is very much the same. These darn cars just keep falling out of the cracks. :)

The colors were quite similar so I actually thought the same thing Andrew but it looks like it was another car/owner (MCMLXXXV) - since sold.
