So... I get to work on my project (KA head on a Z22 block & pistons/L20b crank/Z20 rods), and banzai doesn't get to start an identical project for 3 years. Whoever gets done wins? That's the challenge?

Well, it depends. Would you consider yourself a jerk or a gentleman? (loaded question, I know...)
I ask, because a gentleman bets on principle, and not for the money. So a gentleman's bet would be something like $20. But if you're a jerk, and are just in this because you think i'm incapable, I'd just as soon bet you $1,000 to say I can do it and take you for your money.

Remember the L18 in your 521 telling me and the others How Lame a L20b is cause of the longer stroke. With the scientific data with it.
Now you want to build a stroker motor which is more or less a L20 stroked.
Now what am I supposed to THINK?
I like thing EZ and simple.
Out of the L series
The L20 is the one to get get a 200sx 5 sp and order Dave carrols X member or troy Ermish(Daves clone).Bolts in and ANGLE IS GOOD on the trans!!!!!!!!!
Want a litle more out of the motor get some stock L18 pistons(bump the C/R) (maybe need higher octance). KEY is the correct CAM
Some 40mm carbs . And I believe youll be satisfied.Plus down time is not so great. and gets another 510 on the road instead of in the back yard as most I have seen lately
I drove a Dave Carrol Hybrid LZ and I wasnt all that impressed. Compared to my L20 I had in one of my first 510s
As for the Flywheels Ted said He called Taled to you and was even close to where you lived.
I got pissed because people will now say Hainz gives my # to people who dont come thru.Wasting my time w/ Shady charactors.
As for building a Motor I do plan on a L20 but its only to buid one.
My motors at the rate Im driving them will last another 15-20yrs. the 2 L16s I built(should have built L20s)
As for machine work I have my bores done at Autosport Seattle(Terri).
I put the cam, rockers in and use all NEW timming sets(japan) and rockers, new cam ect. Then I know they last.
also the cores I know are good from a running car/truck that had now over heating proplems. If suspect I dont get them.
As for the SR20 thing.
Once you ride in one youll never go back to a L series.
But I am a L series guy. All other stuff like FI and turbos I know nothing about and will never claim to more than that.

I never said the L20b was lame. I said I didn't prefer it - there's no value judgement involved. And my issue wasn't the longer stroke - it was the relationship between the stroke and the bore. I prefer the bore to be greater than the stroke.
Yes, I suppose I could have just bored the L20b out to 88mm, but that's quite a bit of boring; doing that in the z22e block just makes more sense to me.
It's just a preference - I never said that the L20b was bad, but rather it wasn't what I wanted. My first 510 had an L20b, although it came with the 5-speed truck tranny. It was alright, but I drove it enough to know that it wasn't *exactly* the way I wanted it. The L18 I've got in my white 510 is quite a bit closer to what I like... although it needs a ring job pretty badly.
Just so you have the facts (I'm sure you already know these numbers):
L20b bore: 85mm bore
L20b stroke: 86mm stroke
Z22E bore: 87mm bore
Z22e stroke: 92mm stroke
My engine: 88mm bore
My engine: 86mm stroke
Plus, the longer rods I'm using move the HP further up the RPM band, which is where I prefer it. So basically, I'm building an engine that is characterstically suited to what I want. My goals didn't change. Until I found the specs for the engine I'm building, the L16 and L18 were the only engines that fit what I wanted.
... I don't think I ever talked to Ted. Not by phone, anyway - I think there might have been a little bit of email conversation, but I ended up not needing it, as I said.
Anyhow, this bickering is silly. Very silly. We sound like a bunch of middle-school girls. Let's just drop it - really. Hainz - you've got a wealth of knowledge, and like I said before, I really appreciate it, and know that when I have technical questions, you've got the facts straight. In the meanwhile, I'm going to build up this engine and enjoy doing it.
Updates coming this weekend, if the pistons come in the mail by then.

rods have arrived!
I stated earlier that I already had the rods - it's true... I just didn't have them in my possession yet; they were still enroute. They arrived today at my work, and as the previous owner informed me, one of the rods needs probably needs to be resized. The rods all appear straight, but I'll have the machine shop take a look at them and confirm on that as well.
Fortunately for me, the guy that shipped them to me didn't ask me to pay for them - if they're straight and will work for what I'm doing, I can drop them off at his parents' home (they're local to me) and I won't have to pay anything except the shipping cost. I don't pay unless I find them acceptable. Good times... although I wouldn't recommend that kind of transaction normally. Lots of crooked folks out there, you know?
Once I get those pistons (currently enroute), I'll take everything to a machine shop at once and get everything cleaned up.
