defdes ... The rear rubber mat was used as a template for the rear carpet, slightly modified to fit better. The trans carpet was also traced from the original carpet but again made slightly over sized and added a little tongue in the front as can be seen in the photos... the carpet needs to bend so i had a filler piece installed behind so when it opens up to fit the contour then there is also carpet. The front rubber mats are factory 1972 510 pieces. I used these instead of carpet because of the round nature of the front wheel well doesn't allow carpet to conform well. The rubber pieces have been molded to shape from the factory.

So…., I thought I’d bring this thread back to life with an update as I felt I owed it to the Realm for all the valuable insight I’ve gleaned over the months and just the simple entertainment that reading the various threads has provided. Quick intro, my name is Brian and I’m the guy who purchased the subject of this thread, Terry’s gorgeous 510. I can confirm, the images of the car and the reality are one an the same. Terry’s a craftsman, no doubt about it. I on the other hand, am not. Basic, recurring maintenance, yes I can manage. Restoration? Nope. Metal fabrication? Nope? Welding? What’s that. At my core I’m a cyclist, speed skater, photographer and animal lover but I purchased my first Datsun (71 4 door 510) back in 77’. from a recent transplant to then So Cal from Fairbanks Alaska. My Dad and I rehabilitated it’s engine via Joe Reath’s machine shop in Long Beach CA. Sadly, one morning a year and change after having it up and running, I walked outside one morning to head off to work and it was nowhere to be found. The Sheriff’s office contact me a month later and I went to their yard to see what was left. Picked clean. All mechanicals, electrical’s, panels, hood, trunk, doors, even the jute along the firewallIt were gone. So with that experience under my belt I purchased a Toyota truck and never looked back until….., I entered retirement and while sipping coffee one morning, I discovered the Realm. The memories came roaring back and well, here I sit with Terry’s (er, my) 510 residing in a proper garage here in Vancouver WA. A few mechanical updates have occurred of late but I’ll save those for subsequent posts. More to follow….

The popular vinegar bath process for the fuse box paid dividends...., dome, hazard lights came back on line. Followed TheHeretic's (Ryan's) lead and added some D'Amp Pro to the rear quarter panels with layers of Spectrum atop. Floor pans received the POR-15 treatment for a bit of rust, followed up with three layers of Spectrum and a layer of vinyl backed closed cell foam. Will take a whack at the driver and passenger doors next.

I'm not sure exactly what I'm looking at on the picture of the shift tower or whatever its called. Is that thing bolted directly to the sheet metal in the tunnel? If so, that seems like a problem to me...

Thanks for the kind words. The car originally came from the factory with a floor mounted automatic transmission according to Terry. He in turn, replaced it with a stock 4 speed prior to my entering the scene. A new/used 6 speed box enlarged the opening even further so to help out with mitigating some of the noise, fumes etc entering the cabin I fitted a piece of vinyl backed closed cell foam followed by a Datsport Trans tunnel cover.

Improvements here and there continue....., New retractable seat belts from seat belt planet.com, more D'Amp Pro for the passenger and driver doors, repaired a wrinkle in the passenger side window regulator felt that caused the window to bind (er, come to a halt) when attempting to roll it down) and a new rear fire wall and parcel shelf (not pictured) from the folks at T3.
