Re: 4 link wagon....is in progress
Thanks guys. With the watts link and sway bar there is sure alot of stuff hanging out down there!

Re: 4 link wagon....is in progress
Many years ago, I built a frame mounted Watts link set up like the one Rich posted for my fathers ‘53 Ford PU. It used late 60's Chev P/U trailing arms - much like most NASCAR’s are built today. I'd always read that the Watts link was a great way to go because the axle doesn't swing about an axis, relative to the pan hard bar. But what really surprised me was the amount of suspension travel you can get with a Watts link set up. I also way overbuilt the center mount, but there's no fear of it failing. The truck is air bagged, and was not a performance application in any way - but still trick.
One thing I noticed when traveling in Australia is that a lot of guys there have built Watts link, 4 bar coil over set ups on their strait axle rides, in just about any car imaginable. In a way, that's what inspired the set up on my father’s truck project. I just wanted to do it.

Oh meh gad. I have never seen the Watts setup before. Man theres a lot of ways to link an axle. That must handle super good. I'm gonna miss some of that trunk space....Ehhh feck it, I'll just cage it, tunnel it and tub it.....after I go scan this lottery ticket.

That Watt's link is SUPER COOL! I havent seen that either. I want to bag a wagon someday, maybe that is the route I will go.
Re: 4 link wagon....is in progress
I like the triangulated 4 link myself, simple and works just fine. I think its kinda funny with all these SUV's getting popular the amount of link setups I have seen, I saw the Watts link on a Dodge. I think the Watts link is cool but adds a whole bunch of fab work. If Toyota thinks a standard pan hard bar is fine it must me. No mater what you do with a solid axle its still going to be a zillion pounds of unsprung weight, So keep it simple I like the latter bar to

Simple 4 link done by Hectors chop shop in Santa Rosa. Car is now my problem.

Re: 4 link wagon....is in progress
but a panhard isn't good enough. they need to be quite long to not notice their deficiencies, and width in the 510 is not something we have a lot of.
so... enter in a bunch of other solutions/issues.
as shown in Chunstone's pic above, there's a problem with the standard 4-link - cutting up the floors for the two top bars/arms.
and despite all the fabrication, it is always (should be) still lighter that 2 spring packs. and a good portion that is added is now sprung weight.
but i do believe in compromise, and therefore the simplest and lightest rear end option would be a set of 'glass single leafs, and a panhard rod.

Re: 4 link wagon....is in progress
Going triangulated was the original plan but the seat pan deal kinda killed that idea. Gotta be able to load the goon up once in a while. How does the car ride though Chum? Pretty sure you make a seat fit back there somehow.
Think Im gonna weigh the new rearend, it seems a lot heavier.

Re: 4 link wagon....is in progress
I had been thinking triangulated four link originally(this is all just in thought, I dont even own a wagon, but I've been thinking about it ) for its ease of fabrication requirement and absense of the panhard bar requirement.
I want a large amount of travel in the suspension(think low rider hydraulics), so the panhard bar seemed to me to be an issue, but with the high range of travel that I am thinking of is going to be an issue with axle moving in an arc. The Watt's link setup looks to cure that issue incredibly well.
It(Watt's) is quite heavier in the fabrication required and in weight, but(in theory ), I want to develop my fab skills more anyway, and the weight shouldn't be an issue in a KA lowrider anyway.

I don't know how the car rides as I just picked it up not running.

Re: 4 link wagon....is in progress
The 210's ('78 on) and A510s had a triangulated 4 bar set up - and they had back seats that were functional - so it must be possible. I know that many of the A510's were sucessfully rallied all over the world, so wheel travel must not have been much of an issue. Just a thought anyways, maybe it's time to crawl under those cars, see how Nissan made it work in the packaging department, because it seemed to work well.

Re: 4 link wagon....is in progress
Okay guys heres some recent pics with the top brace mounted(not bolted on yet tho)
I'm pretty stoked on how it came out.
Its all starting to come together. Went satin black on the components.
Now I'm waiting for my fuel tank to get finished by Alumiworx, you guys think 10.5 gallons is enough? I had to keep low pro co i dont want to hang too low past the body and I needed room for a muffler...pesky mufflers!

Make sure your exhaust doesn't have any leaks and exits well beyond the bumper
