Help to find an L20B flywheel in Europe

Post by 1600SSS72 »

I am rallying in Europe, Portugal, a ' 72 P510 with an L20B tuned to around 160 hp with twin 48 Webers and an FS5W71B gearbox from a 280ZX with 4.44 LSD Subaru diff.
Now, after 10 years of hard work with no big problems, we must replace clutch, a competition Helix, and flywheel is cracked.
Unfortunately I must have the only L20B engine around here, as the usual donnor 720 pickups were never sold here, so I need your help to know if in the Z family (the 240Z/260Z/280Z and 280ZX are common here) I can find a replacement f/w. with similar spec.
Thank you.

Other than having a 225mm friction surface, the 240/6/8 flywheels have the same ring gear diameter and 6 crank bolt attachment. You will have to buy the matching clutch.

There is also a 240mm flywheel for the 2+2 and turbo ZX cars that will 'fit', but that's overkill for you.

There are also aftermarket lightened flywheels out there that might be a reasonable choice, as the 225 flywheels and clutches will be heavier than the 200mm L20b flywheel and clutches.

All six cylinder and 4 cylinder 2 liters and more are 6 bolt mount to the crankshaft and will interchange.

They were drilled to accept either a 200mm 225mm or a 240mm pressure plate.

6 bolt flywheels can weigh either 29 or 21 pounds. So if you have a 225mm 29 pound wheel it will weigh more than a 240mm 21 pound wheel. Only way to know is remove and look on the engine side of the flywheel. The 29 (give or take a pound) wheel is solid on the back side. The 21 pound (again give or take a pound, I weighed on a bathroom scale) is scalloped on the front to reduce weight.

BIG difference. I have a 280zx (non turbo) 225mm flywheel and it was the lighter 21 pound. The heavier are (usually) for 4 cylinder trucks that needs stored kinetic energy to get heavy weight moving.

The Z series gas and diesel as well as the KA series wheels will also fit the L20B.
