Diff modifications
Diff modifications
Good day Gents.
I have a 1972 510 4 door with a Lexus V8 engine in it.
I have a problem with diffs not lasting. The Subaru diffs are really rare to find in South Africa.
How difficult would it be to modify another diff for example a BMW diff they really popular here?

Re: Diff modifications
i would put a R200 from a 280z or zx if those are readily available- - cheap and definitely can take a v8-- i have a ford 5.0 in a Z and have yet to break a diff-- now half shafts are a different story i manage to blow those- and time to upgrade to CVs

Re: Diff modifications
Yep. Even an R180 from a newer subi would probably be up for the task if it uses some good oil and isn’t hooned. Different types of LSDs available (in NA anyways).
I would exhaust a few of the easier options before I redid everything for a different rear end.

Re: Diff modifications
stephen is in south africa , witch makes a subie R180 very hard to find.
R200 open diffs are however available .
i managed to fit an LS unit from an S13 200SX into a longnose R200 with some modifications.
i still need to have the sideshafts made.one big downside of this is the s13 LS unit needs the S13 cv cups/input shaft to engage the LS unit.and it took me a very long time to source the input shaft's/inner cv's .

Progress is slow, but it is progress non the less.
Re: Diff modifications
I think I will look for the R200 then, wont be LS but at least it will keep turning.
Thanks gents.

Re: Diff modifications
you can get a phantomgrip which pushes the spider gears out and give it a sort of posi traction- ive used one and it does leave 2 solid marks when launching-- - i think they were like 300 last time i got one-

I looked at those. Kinda scared of what it's doing to the spider gears. Anyone have any opinions on them? Sorry for the kinda thread jack...

Re: Diff modifications
That looks very clean! Did you do the swap yourself? Looks like the firewall was moved rearward somewhat?
