Three B’s, how much time were you into the trans rebuild and which kit did you buy? I’m afraid my runner and spare are both in this position with definite bearing noise while idling with the trans in neutral.

Did you buy a kit of tools/pullers etc or build them as required?

Drivetrain.com and transmissionpartsdistributors.com have rebuild kits although the latter is cheaper. Bearings, seals, syncro’s. I’ve gotten kits from both, they are identical. BK104WS I believe is the PN.

I’m in the middle of rebuilding at least three of my FS5W71B 5 speed stash. Busted bearings, worn out shift forks, etc. Nothing special is required to teardown or press back together other than a tall press, and really long rods on the bearing puller. I just bought Gr8 3/8” threaded rod. Lots of video’s on YouTube

I’m even working on a simple way to do the machining on L bellhousings to allow you to use the “C” type trans from the 240sx. No more begging and paying machine shops to do it.

The kit I got was for the FS5W71C trans for the rwd SR20DET that is a 2 synchro 2nd gear and syncro'd reverse. Before tearing it down its best to first check all the gears end play so you'll know if more parts are needed. I could have rebuilt it in a day but needed extra parts like 1st and 2nd shift insert springs, thrust washer that sits between 1st gear and mainshaft bearing, thicker 3rd-4th gear snap ring that sits in front of the synchronizer hub effectively holding 3rd gear end play in spec.

Plastic synchro??? I have a '79 280zx 5 speed which is the same transmission as the 280z, 810 and the '77-'78 620 and didn't notice anything, must have missed it.

The '77-'78 280z uses an odd ball 5th synchro 323610-20100. Doesn't even look like other rings. First used on the 2 liter Roadster, also on the '79 280zx, 620, 810 and no later than 10 '79 on the 720 and S110 200sx. So just a month or two into the '80 model years then changed to the brass type.

It appears to not have ' teeth' but is, or appears to be a large thick C shape with a gap in it so yes it fits your ambidextrous description. Totally unlike the brass ones. Isn't that something. Thanks TJ for pointing this out, never knew.
