Mine is NOT a direct drive, as I needed top speed also, I have the .864(5) overdrive. With my rear gearing, as most of you know, that lets me pull some serious top speed in 5th.
I have the steel syncros of course, which you can "feel" as you pull the next gear, but, that being said, it still shifts very smoothly...and I am just used to the damn thing after so many years.
It is very noisy though, which I must admit I wish it was a bit quieter. Once I am in 5th, and under load over4,000 rpm, it seems just fine.

Re: Direct drive 5 speed
Are you guys aware that it is not a difficult conversion to swap SR20 internals into L series boxes
and vice verca.
This makes it possible to use OS giken close ratio gear sets for the SR.
Unfortunatly they are OD sets only.
A few ratios to choose from. first 3 gears or full set depending on budget & requirements.

Re: Direct drive 5 speed
Mike..I have the FS5C71B, over drive: 2.906, 1.902, 1.308, 1.000, .865, and they call it the close ratio OVERDRIVE,
P/N 32010-N3130.
Baz... I was not aware that that swap could be done. I will mention that to Andy. You say it is not difficult, but, what is actually required to do that?
Thanks.

Recently we put the 2.9 first Z box into an S13 gear box case, bertvorgon wrote:Mike..I have the FS5C71B, over drive: 2.906, 1.902, 1.308, 1.000, .865, and they call it the close ratio OVERDRIVE,

NA S15 for track use we needed the closer ratios.
L into SR : change the front lay gear bearing to SR bearing.
Fit bush ( turned down "A series" pilot bush) into SR housing.
This is due to the L series main gear selector shaft being smaller in diameter than the L series.
SR into L " fit L series lay gear bearing & ream out the L housing to take the larger SR selector shaft.
or turn down the selector shaft to suit.
Piss easy job really.
Check out the giken gear sets for the SR.
