R180 Fitment in a 510
Knowing that no mods are neccessary when putting the R180 in a 510, can the 510 rear diffs stub axles be used in the R180? The R180 has the bolt in stub axle setup.
Thanks
Thanks

The R160 stub shafts (and bolts) will work IF you remove the dust shield from the stub shaft. I've done this many times and not found water ingress to be a problem. Otherwise you'll need to source a pair of 240Z stub shafts.

Re: R180 Fitment in a 510
Sweet so then I remove the whole dust shield then or can I simply remove the lip that folds over the axle seal to protect it?
Thanks Byron I appreciate the quick response.

Re: R180 Fitment in a 510
There are usually three little mig spot welds that hold the formed sheet metal dust shield to the machined stub shaft. In the past I have removed these three tack welds with either a hack saw or zip cut wheel to remove the dust shields all together. Make note of your work, don't leave any sharp edges from your cuts on the stub shaft as these can be stress raisers and if under stress could be a point of failure (not that they are prone, just a warning that good craftsmanship can lead to a longer lasting part). Make sure to polish the nicely ground area on the stub shaft right up to the where the dust shield used to be, because the seal on the diff side plates will now run here, and there is likely 40 years of built up crap on this area. A dirty, crusted seal surface will wipe out the seal in about 10 feet of operation netting a nice oil leak that will once again necessitate disassembly to correct.

Lou,
I still have that rusty 240Z R180, but it has the right stub axles.
Come get it, its FFFFRRREEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!
Not sure what I'd do with it other than put it back into the barn for another 10-15 years.
Leaving for the SCCA Runoffs at Road America. I'll be around tonight or I can leave it in the middle of the driveway and you can come by anytime.

Re: R180 Fitment in a 510
Ya, did all that already. It was apparent when I removed the dust shields YIKES!!! Though I will be replacing them with the correct stub axles because I'm not to comfortable with those seals exposed like that even if they are new. But then they are very simple to replace without having to drop the pumpkin. I put the diff in yesterday and boy was it a bit of a chore lifting it into position took me a whole two beers to get it all back together,,,should have taken my time as I had a whole sixerByron510 wrote:There are usually three little mig spot welds that hold the formed sheet metal dust shield to the machined stub shaft. Jeff and I did a snap in R180 unit from a 200sx S12 I think it was.
he picked that one cause it had a 3.90 Gear ratio. the Z car have a High gear ratio otherwise the 240Z diff is a bolt in.

My R180 is out of an automatic with 3.54 ratio. It's behind an SR20DE S14 and it likes it,,very much!

Re: R180 Fitment in a 510
Hey Lou,
Good to catch-up and I'm glad I could "hook you up" with some R180 stub axles.
My Dad was impressed with your 510. He's an old hot rodder from way back. He had a '53 Merc flathead with dual straight pipes. For you young guys this was the HOT flathead Ford and straight pipes are exactly that, straight pipe with no mufflers.
