FS5W71B made after '79. Appears to be L series with only the reverse lamp switch so '80-'83 non turbo 280zx or '80 810 or '81-'84 Maxima. All were EFI and had no need to top gear and neutral switches for emission control. The '80 720 2wd L20B would have these switches. These are the only L series 5 speeds after '79.

Pretty sure it's L series but really bad angle on the photo. Can you post one from the rear looking toward the engine?

Place in first gear, mark the input and output splines at say... 12 o'clock. Get help and turn the input exactly 20 turns while counting the output turns.

6.5 output turns.... wide ratio.... '79 620 or '80 720. NOT this one, but I included for anyone else that does this test.
6 output turns...... mid ratio..... 810 or Maxima transmission
6.5 output turns.... close ratio... 280zx transmission

I am still curious why it has ZL where it should be FS

F was for floor shift (R would be for Remote as in column shift)
S was for special overdrive 5th. (There were non over drive 5 speeds and the S would be missing)
5 was the number of forward gears
W was for the Warner synchros
71 was the number of mm between main and counter shafts.
B was the style of shifter There was an earlier FS5W71A (external shift mechanism, similar to the 510) and a later FS5W71C

LZ was the two series of engines it was used on in the early 80s. There was even an SD22 and SD25 diesel used. I don't remember if it had SD on it. The SD has the starter on the left and can be made to work on a Roadster... but that another story.

L20B....... '80 720
Z22........ '81-'82
Z24........ '83-
L24........ 810 and Maxima
L28........ '80-'83 280z non turbo.

I have an '85 CA18ET 5 speed. Same FS5W71B but with a few up-grades.

is the bell housing the same as a L or a Z on the ca ? have I been missing out on potential parts for a 510 with a L or a Z ?

picked up two 720 4x4s with the z24s, one truck has 411s the other 435s.......will the fsw71b's have different final drives ?

both transmissions still have stickers on the bell housing if that helps (1st)0963774 (2nd)0150547

I was going to post the vins but its slushing out pretty good. got about 2 inches of slurpee on the ground

L Z and CA series have different bolt positions on the bell housing.

KA and Z series are identical.

The first transmission is likely made June of '79 and probably from the truck with the 4.375 differential. The other transmission is May '81 with the 4.11 differential. This is when they were made not installed.... and this if my facts are correct. Its odd the they both had Z24s but different differentials. You sure both say Z24 on the engine tag?

I think all 4x4 5 speeds had the same over drive ratio 0,813

Mike, what transmission was mated to the FJ20?

I could be wrong on the diffs but definitely z24s...could be the 3rd truck I dint buy had the 4.375s. one of the trucks is missing its tags.
Image
but it dosn't look like it matters if all 4x4 5spd trucks have the same over drive :(

are you sure there's no higher over drive on a 4x4 5spd :) ...the 4x4 5spd in 6inches of rust feels like 0.98 over :(

Those are shorty 26" boxes. Z series and the right one most definitely from a 4x4. Can't see the other but likely. I have a short 4x4 box and though there are short 2wd ones I haven't seen one.

Place in 5th gear and mark the input and output splines, say 12 o'clock. Turn the input 20 times while counting the output.

If you get about 24.5 output turns (roughly), divide into 20 and.... 24.6 / 20 = .816 which allowing for error is pretty close to 0.813

It may be different but that's what I have.

This Silvia 240rs (AKA the S110 200sx here)Shows a competition 71B non over drive.

We didn't get it here so I'm out on thin ice. It was used in the 80s Silvia (S110 and the S12) elsewhere. Our S110 and S12 used an FS5W71B till '86.5 when it was retired for the newer FS5W71C.

I imaging this thing make torrid power (Power: 177kw @ 7200rpm Torque: 235Nm @ 6000rpm Compression ratio: 11.0:1) 177kw about 237?hp.... the FJ24 was 207Kw or 277hp) so the best 5 speed possible would be the FS5W71C. Our earliest use of the 71C was in the '84 300zx. So it's been around at least this long.

If I were them, I would run the 71C as soon as it was available. This is speculation.

Will those shorty 720 boxes go into a 510 with the stock drive shaft uncut?

worked that way for me in the 69 092 (2dr auto)with a stock 4spd member ... only problem is the speedo pinion is in the Tcase.... the boss is on the case. maybe Mike can tell us what is needed to install the pinion beyond drilling out the boss. is the gear on the shaft or dose it need to be striped, parts changed, re shimmed ?
