Re: rebuilding half-shafts?
Disassembled one half-shaft today. Here are some pics. Eventually you'll see the problem I uncovered along the way.

Re: rebuilding half-shafts?
Trying to keep the 4 sets of balls-and-spacers separate from each other, and associated with the correct races in the shaft. A filed notch on the end of the shaft is the key (it matches a notch filed on the axle tube, to keep them properly aligned as well).

Re: rebuilding half-shafts?
Bad news though: the notchiness I felt while telescoping the shaft (on the bench) is due to these grooves/wear marks in the races. The brownish staining is obviously rust... yet these look simply like wear marks to me? In any case though, this is not good.

Another set of wear-marks in another of the races. Two of the four races are like this.

Re: rebuilding half-shafts?
There is a mention in the body and chassis manual about replacing that o-ring.SteveEdmonton wrote:

Finally, the matching wear-marks in the outer part of the axle.

Re: rebuilding half-shafts?
So, how serious is this wear in the races? As noted, I became aware of the problem only when telescoping the axle by hand on the bench. Didn't notice any problem while driving. Clean, grease, reassemble, drive? Or-- ?
The note about replacing that o-ring is helpful. I'll definitely want to do that, yeah.

Re: rebuilding half-shafts?
I think all you can do is grease it up good and re assemble.
Chad.
Chad.
In just two days from now, tomorrow will be yesterday.
Re: rebuilding half-shafts?
I don't think it would be an issue either, when they are on the car they just slide in and out a few inches if that....re-grease and put them back together....just does the old "in and out"
Re: rebuilding half-shafts?
Do you want me to scan the page from the manual? It shows how to check the specs with a dial indicator to see if it's worn out and not usable.
