I know you are almost never, ever wrong, but here you go...
But I still have no idea if Dayton's swap might work.[/quote]

Ah, I think I see how I went wrong. My info looks like it is solely for the first gen up to '04. Nothing is listed under Xterra for '05. (and like the 300zx I thought they may have stopped making them?) This is what I get for owning a car almost 40 years old and not wanting to keep up with the present. I'll return to my cave.

Dayton, this may or may not work but it looks like the gears are what you want. Wasn't saying you were wrong just that everything I have and know said differently.

Yup, the R-180. I was worried the ratio was different.... the rear and the fronts will have the same ratio.

No worries as I have posted to the other Nissan forums with little response.. No one ever goes where my buddy Tom and go with our bastardized car... but having 3.13 would be nice and that is the lowest I have found to exist in an R180. I would prefer 3.0 or 2.9 ratios but that is not going to happen unless I go to a totally different rear suspension and drive train... The R180 (3.36) has done me well to this point....

Again thanks to to every one...

But one last question anyone know whether the 1979 Z car R180 the clip in axles or the older style?

Again thanks to everyone...

Hi Dayton,

The modely year (MY)’79 would be a 280ZX. The diff would depend; The manual transmission cars will have an R200 – full stop. The auto cars will have an R180, but these you have to watch - some came with a system where the half shafts bolted directly into the dif with no side flange at all. It may work for you, but be wary that there is a difference. I believe some of the Maxima's had the same system of fixation for the halfshafts.

Hello everyone and thanks again for all the feedback. I have some follow-up questions. I bought another R180 but made the mistake of buying an earlier year.. 1971 R180. I am not sure if I made a mistake amd and should have gone with 1977 or newer. I missed that detail that one member pointed out in his reply. Now for my questions.

1.) I was told that the R180 used two different size bolts to secure ring gear to the carrier some where the 10mm some were 12 mm, can someone confirm if this is true and what years did they change. Also any guesses to what the Xterra R180 3.13 gears used?

2.) If the Xterra uses the 115 mm ring gear, do you think I can use the whole carrier assembly from the Xterra and swap it into the R180 case from the 71 Z car which should have orginally had a 110 mm ring gear? Or will there a space issue and I need to buy a 77 or newer R180 for this?

3.) If can swap the Xterra carrier into the 71 z car diffy casing would I be able to use the 71 R180 side gears with the Xterra carrier?

4.) Does anyone know if I can buy shim kits for these diffys?

Again thanks in advance and hope within the next couple weeks can tell you all how this goes.

Bummer. That's why I mentioned it in my earlier post.

If it is an earlier version R180, then you have to use the earlier stuff. You cannot mix and match.
Might be best to sell it and start over.

Shims for the later R180 LSDs might be avail from Subaru (for their R180 cLSDs up to 2006), or maybe Nissan.
Be careful, as a single shim change can have dramatic increase in breakaway pressure.
And you have to assemble the entire diff and test it to find that out.
Gordon Glasgow's page (search using Google) can walk you thru it.
I also posted links to the online Subaru diff manuals earlier on.

Good luck!

I think that subi CLSD r180 extends to 07,

IIRC:

04' and 05' STIs came with a CLSD, 3.9 ratio
06' STIs came with a CLSD, 3.54 ratio
07' STIs came with a Torsen LSD, 3.54 ratio
08' STIs came with a Torsen LSD, 3.9 ratio

Reviving an old thread here. I'm contemplating installing a lower gear (numerically higher) in my '04 STI LSD. Subaru sells new 4.44 ring and pinion, which I know will work, but they aren't cheap. Being a thrifty 510 owner, I am wondering if I can use the ring and pinion from a K case 720 or Hardbody 4x4 pickup front diff (4.11 or 4.37 ratio, depending on year) in my differential. My research leads me to believe that this is possible, as they should both have the later 115mm ID ring gear.

I was wondering if anybody has done this before I go out and scour the wrecking yards for older Nissan Pickups.

the gears in a datsun 4x4 front diff are cut for the front. if used in the rear you will be running on the wrong side of the gear. I think Keith is running a 720 F diff

No, my diff was out of a 280 and the LSD and 4:6 gears came right from Nissan Comp at the time. They now have been in service for some 34 years.

I got a used Subaru R160 4.44 ring and pinion for $250 a couple of years ago. I have seen a few more around that price over the years.
If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?

Norm, Duke's "K" reference implies an R180 ---> The 720 4x4 trucks and D21 4x4 trucks used an R180 as their front differential. As has been highlighted, the gears are supposedly cut in a slightly different manner, in order to be compression-loaded on the opposite side as 'normal' differential gears (like 'normal' RWD R180 gears!). This was debated in an earlier thread, but it seems that the front R180 diffs are just the same old same old...

James ("McShagger510") has 4.37 gears from a 720 4x4 K-case + Power Brute LSD diff in his green turbo 510.

Here is a link to the thread that captures both bit of information ---> viewtopic.php?t=27056

Duke,
I run the 4.44 JDM Subaru Sti gears. Definitely pricey but has served me well so far.

These from riffs have been compared in the past to rear riffs, and photos show that they are intact cut the same direction. We concluded that Nissan actually ran a r at diff backwards in the 720 4x4.

I've been running a 4.375 K 720 diff with a Percision Gear LSD since I removed the R190 in 2008 in the Bronze. I've also run this same diff in my rally car, the ice racer, my 68 solo II car.

Jordan did post a photo of the R32 Skyline front diff that he took out of his car, and it clearly showed that this R160 was a properly cut front gear set. But for sure the R180's in 720's were run backwards.

:-)
