Which is what Baz was suggesting. Baz, so Aussie 510s have the bypass coolant circuit?

The coolant pipe from the carb is to act as a carb heater, not a bypass.

It's more of a manifold warmer in cold weather to help evaporate raw gas droplets. In extreme summer heat it 'cools' the intake below boiling point from radiated heat from the exhaust only inches away. This avoids big swings in intake air temps and makes the engine more efficient, cleaner running. If the carb is heated it's more from the warmed air drawn into the snorkel on the air filter to prevent carb icing.

This pipe from the intake is joined by the by pass from the thermostat housing and returns the water to the lower rad inlet to the water pump. It is an elegant cure to both problems.
