5spd 3-4 gear syncro hub direction

Post by 69rally510 »

I just finished rebuilding a 78 Z car 5spd and have a question about the direction of the 3rd-4th gear syncro hub. If I read it correctly the DQ article says the thicker part of the hub should be installed towards the front of the trans. the 78 280 service manual shows a picture which shows what I call the "thicker center of the hub installed towards the rear. I've done several of these trans in the past but not for many years and this is the first I did with the DQ article. When the front circlip is installed on the input shaft bearing there a rubbing or grinding sound when you turn the input shaft. If you remove the ring and push the shaft to the rear the noise goes away. It almost seems like the syncro teeth on the input shaft boss are rubbing on the counter shaft main drive gear. I appreciate any help you guys can give me.

Thanks guys. As it turns out I took the trans back apart and also tore apart a 4 spd which has the same gears in it. The service manual is correct (Duh!!!). I know I shouldn't question 30 plus year old info. If you read the article again it could be interpretated as agreeing with the manual. What I did learn is that I had the counter drive gear on backwards ( in the article but I missed it) which positions the farther rearward allowing the teeth to rub on the input shaft syncro teeth when the snap ring is installed. All better now. Thanks. This is a great site to have.

The 510 has received a little work lately but not much. Jim rolled the newly rebuilt Colt and then there's 323 to do. the trans for the 510 is on the trans table and about to get worked on. Thanks guys
