280Z /ZX trannies-- 4 speed vs. 5 speed

Post by SteveEdmonton »

Hi guys;
Anybody know what the external differences are between the base 280Z 4-speed (1977), which I gather was also the base tranny in the early 280ZX (1978 at least, I think)-- and the 5-speed that was available as an option in those years?

Obviously the shift pattern has an extra throw... :) ... but let's say you can't actually shift the thing. Is there a way to tell just by looking whether it's a 4-speed or a 5-speed? Or do they use identical cases with only the innards being different?

Thanks!

The F4W71B (4 spd) from the 280z or first year zx or even the 620 truck all have a rectangular cover plate and 6 mounting bolts holding it on. It's just forward of the shifter and has a small flat breather cap on it.

The FS5W71B (5 spd) from the '77-'78 280z and '77-'79 620 truck, and the '79-'83 280zx does not have this cover plate.

Thanks Mike, that helps a lot.

But now the plot thickens. I picked up this tranny at PickNPull the other day, from a '77 280Z.

It had no shift knob or diagram. I ran it through the shift pattern and couldn't get it into 5th. Reverse was a tough shift too though, so I figured 5th is probably just old and baulky. Present, but not working. (Obviously I wasn't excited about that-- but I hoped that a rebuild could sort the problem out.)

But after I got it home, I did more research and found out that the 5-speed was an OPTION in '77. I hadn't known that. I thought that any manual tranny I came across in that year of 280Z was a 5-speed. (Stupid mistake, but there you are.)

So I tried to shift the darned thing again, and again only came up with 4 speeds, plus a somewhat stiff reverse.

That's why I asked the question earlier, whether you can visually tell a 4-speed from a 5-speed, coming out of a '77 280Z. Your pictures tell me that I've got a 5-speed. But I can't actually "find" 5th gear!

BTW, this was (is?) going to be a spare tranny. I already have a 5-speed from a '79 280ZX in my 510, so I'm pretty sure I know what the shift pattern is, and how they feel when they shift, etc. I don't think I'm trying to use a non-existent shift pattern! :?

Ideas? Suggestions?

Did you rotate the input shaft while trying to engage fifth?

Errrr, no I didn't. Not until seeing your note, that is. Bingo, that was the issue alright. A little spin of the shaft and-- magic!-- 5th gear appears out of nowhere!

Thanks for your help, everyone. For someone as smart as I usually think I am, I really do make some dumb mistakes sometimes....

The 5 speed was an option for the '77-'78 280z and also the first year ('79) 280zx. They all had identical gear ratios and were for all intents the same transmission. This same transmission and gearing was an option on the '77 and '78 620 truck and the '78 810. On the '81 and on Maxima it was standard equipment. The '79 620 and the '80 720 (still an option) had a wide ratio gear set with a much lower 1st gear.

Nice S110 factory mags! The first time I saw them I was hooked. (thanks Jason) I have a set on both my 710s.
