R160 gear swap
Will 4.11 gears fit in a CLSD diff with 3.70 gears? I understand there are two different gear carriers. One is for the lower gear sets, but I don't know where the change point is.

Re: R160 gear swap
I put 4.44 gears into a diff that had 3.70. You may just need to get the carrier holes bored out.
If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?
Re: R160 gear swap
Put the CLSD in the 4:11 rather than the 4:11 R&P in the 3:7. I did a write up on it on the old NWDE site which the archive can be found on Ratsun.

DQ Volume 10 Issue 1 - Tech How-To: R160 Differential Rebuild, Part I -- R160 differentials dont often need service or a rebuild, but when they do, where do you go to find that information? In Part I, Derek Garnier shows how to disassemble your R160 and R160 LSD and also reviews the steps necessary to convert to 4.11 gears.
And
DQ Volume 10 Issue 3 - Tech How-To: R160 Differential Rebuild, Part II -- In Part I, we finished with a fully disassembled, cleaned, and painted differential housing along with a fully disassembled and cleaned (and possibly machined) center section. It’s now time to inspect our parts, order bearings and seals, reassemble, and adjust the differential.

Thanks for the info
Re: R160 gear swap
I've got a question along these lines - is it possible to put a taller gear in my R160, and if so what size and source?
I've got a clutch LSD 3.7 and find the gearing too short, I hate having to shift mid-way through an intersection (1 -> 2). A bit taller cruising would also be nice.

Re: R160 gear swap
Geez, the only taller gears I can think of are 3.54 and 3.36 - both found in the R180's used in the 240Z. At least on these shores anyways. Maybe someone else can chime in.

Re: R160 gear swap
I took a call from a local enthusiast regarding more recent production and older 510 style R160 differentials => what is the difference.
Havening not played with a newer R160, I could not answer the question. Without going into R180 or R200 diffs, specifically how many generations of the R160 are there? And more specifically, what is interchangeable?
The local guy, who may pop up here, has an early 510 R160 CLSD diff in his vintage racer car. After 30 years of use, the pinion gear let go this past weekend. The result actually split the case as the pinion gear tried to climb over the crown gear. However the all-important LSD section was spared, and after disassembly and inspection the LSD unit is still in good shape.
Of course the LSD unit can go back into another stock R160 510 vintage diff with 3.90 gears, this is known.
So the question is, what can he install this CLSD unit into that is currently available? A 4.11 or 4.37 gear set is preferred.
Can anyone who’s actually completed this swap chime in for us?
Thanks, Byron

Re: R160 gear swap
You are talking about something currently available WITH the bolt in stubs?
Re: R160 gear swap
If possible - yes - the current set up still uses the stock half shafts and bolt on flanges.
If the CLSD is utilized in a later model diff, are the stub shafts not secured by bolts in the older CLSD unit itself?
Assuming of course that you can install an old CLSD unit in a newer R160 differential. Can this be done?

Re: R160 gear swap
That's an interesting idea and would love to hear if it would work. Someone on here would have to have had them both cracked open side by side.Byron510 wrote:I

I have been wanting to change from the 3.9 to a 4.11 for some time and the older variants are very hard to find.
If your friend wanted to go deep into it, Todd Walrich might have some gear sets on his shelf.
Re: R160 gear swap
For this project, the plan was to install an existing good CLSD unit from an older R160 into a newer 4.11 or 4.37 diff from a Subaru. Just confirming with anyone who may have tried - is this possible?

Re: R160 gear swap
Byron, I'm reading this thread and though I have no experience regarding compatibility between early and late parts, I do have both 4.11 and 4.375 diffs sitting here. Not sure if this would be of help to your friend. Both open diffs, complete, older units. I might want to hold onto the 4.11 undecided, but the 4.375 can go.
Re: R160 gear swap
Hi Jim, both riffs you have are R160 or R180?
