U-joint recommendation
U-joint recommendation
So I went to get a timeslip on the 510 yesterday. Cleaned the tires a little in the box, car launched well, grabbed second and snap! Front u-joint. So went back to pit area, slapped in back up shaft (unknown condition). Went to box cleaned tires, launched car a little softer, grabbed 2nd and again, Snap! Front joint again
Sooo- no timeslip and looking for advise. Thanks
*I should also add they were both grease able style, are the non grease able solid? I noticed mine were hollow in order to let grease travel thru the joint

Re: U-joint recommendation
Non greasable would be solid, even though... what engine are you using that would do this to a greasable one?
Too much traction and too much power = something breaking. At the moment they are the weakest link in your chain.
1/Narrower tires would give more and slip, acting as a fuse to limit drive line shock?
2/Shorter gears will reduce the drive line shock.
3/ Ignition retard or some other power reducer used through first and first shift, turned off in second.

Re: U-joint recommendation
Well... Its a ka car and makes around 350 #'s of torque at the rear tires, so the driveline limits have been exceed multiple times. It is a street car (no local tracks) and handled this power for years on the street, so YES it was the new found traction that broke it for sure! Now I just want the best quality joint available and I'll stay off the track for now
On another yet similar note- how about switching to the d21 (although u-joint looks same size ears are larger), or sr slip yoke (this may be all 240's? Don't know, came with my sr)? Obviously only after r-180 and vg trans are installed
I like the $20 fixes! Hahahaha

Re: U-joint recommendation
My custom driveshaft uses a 3" tube and 1310 Spicer U joints with forged components from the catalog linked below. Non greaseable and totally bulletproof.

Re: U-joint recommendation
The later Nissan stuff went to staked u-joints; my local driveline shop doesn't consider them replaceable. A custom driveshaft may be in your future. I'd stop by a recommended shop and see what they can do. $20 fixes will get you back on the road (Spicer are good parts and there's a 510 replacement), but not down the 1/4 mile.

http://shaftmasters.com/ is a real cheap alternative to the DSS.

Or what Jordan said. And keep in mind you'll want to start thinking about the half shafts, 'cause they're probably next.
