Wagon Rear Gears

Post by Brad.Miller »

Just curious who sells gearing options for the wagon rear ends? I hit up the old google machine with no luck.

No one. Used only, scrounging from the leftovers of Roadster owners or adapting the early truck parts.

All wagons have 3.88 gears. What are you looking for?

I have it in a book somewhere that the J series 520 trucks had 4.88 or 5.13 gears. I have back half of a 520 that I use as a utility trailer, but have never checked the years on it. It's one of this "one day" projects that I just have not got around to.

The 521 and early 620 trucks had 4.375 gears. I tried swapping in a while Center section from one of these, but the splines were larger in the truck than in the 510 wagon. I had another wagon Center section at the time and did not try a ring and pinion swap - so I can not advise there.

Brad,

The 3.9 gears in the wagon with that mild L20B should be fine. Just do the 5 speed swap and enjoy. Unless you build that motor, the lower rear will not help enough to make it worth swapping the R & P.

You have plans to auto cross it?

Not sure what my plans are.... I was just curious and I was coming up with a few different ratios when I searched for the info.

I will be driving it over to get that trans soon. I am looking forward to that extra gear I keep looking for...Haha

The 510wagon had an H-190 differential. So did the...

Roadster.................... 3.889 (4.11 optional)
520/521*................... 4.875 with J 13 and 4.375 with the L16
620*......................... 4.11, 4.375 and 4.625
610 wagon................. 3.70 and 3.889
810 wagon................. 3.70 and 3.889
'81'84 Maxima............. 3.364 and 3.545
'82-'83 S110 (200sx)*..... 3.545 and 3.70
'84 S12 (200sx)*........... 3.70 and 3.889
720*......................... 3.364. 3.545, 3.70, 3.889, 4.11, 4.375 and 4.625 (avoid 4x4 differentials)
D21* Hardbody/Xterra.... 3.545, 3.70 and 3.889

H-190s with an astrix * came with the 29 spline side gears. All trucks and the 200zx had them. All others will have the 23 spline side gears and be compatible with the 510 axles. Yes you can carefully dismantle the H-190 differential and swap the side gears.

Roadster, 520/521, 510 wagon and early 620 differentials were an aluminum case, others are much heavier.

Admittedly Mike, that's a very cool synapsis of the H190 diffs, is this a collection of info over time or is there a source that you used?

Very good information in so few lines, well done.

Under the 720 truck entry, why do you say 'avoid 4x4 differentials'?

Does Scotty tell Kirk how he fixes the Enterprise so fast???

Where there was two ratios that were close like a 3.70 and a 3.889 this was the manual vs. the automatic difference. The wide range of gears for the 720 was due to three gas and one diesel engine plus 2 and 4 wd vehicle weights. While mentioning the 720s and later trucks, there is an engine tag located on the right side inner fender under the hood hinge. Bottom right corner it will say HF38 for a 3.889 or HF41 for a 4.11 and so on. The 620s were all 4.375, except the early L16 powered automatics... 4.625, and the '79 4 and 5 speed manuals... 4.11.

Around '82 the flange the driveshaft bolts to was made larger for a larger diameter (stronger) drive shaft on the 4x4. Naturally I removed it to put a 'regular' flange on so I could use it on my 2wd truck. In a move reminiscent of the big three, Nissan used a different flange spline and an older 2wd flange will not fit a later 4x4 pinion. (figures)

I laboriously ground the outer flange off the 2wd, and welded it piggy back onto the 4x4 flange. I still have it.
