Get yourself a FSM, or a copy of the "How To Keep Alive" book.

I have always run Castrol 20w-50 in my L-18. I live in a warm area, but the tolerances on the L-series seem to be happier with the thicker weight.

With the debate about the lowering of ZDDP levels and what really constitutes someone else's idea of protection, I just switched to 15w40 Shell Totella T. (Chevron Dello 400 similar) It's a 'light' diesel oil with a reasonably high ZDDP rating. Diesels still need the increased ZDDP for their 'flat tappet' cams similar to ours.

I fully agree with DM re Shell 'Rotella' diesel oil. It is a reasonably priced dinosaur based oil that I've used for years. Cam looks perfect. Synthetics are worth considering as well, no worry about needing ZDDP with Mobil 1 or the equivalent.

We like to use the Brad Penn oils, Break-in, 10w-40, and 20w-50. Plenty of ZDDP and a ton cheaper than the so-called Classic Car oils like Joe Gibbs...also semi-synthetic
