Height of 1600 (and/or 1800) SSS aircleaner?

Post by SteveEdmonton »

Anybody know what the "height" of the 1600 / 1800 SSS air cleaner is?

I've got flat-top SUs on my L20B with pancake-style filters (K&N's) but I want to have them sucking cooler air from the outside, not whatever they can grab from right there on top of the exhaust. (Here's my current setup):

So I'm deciding whether to build an airbox or try to find and use a "stock" SSS box with an added snorkel extending up to the grille area.

I know there's a clearance issue against the brake master cylinder; that's why I'm asking how tall the box is. I would have a maximum of about 80mm to play with between the throat of the rear carb and the body of the BMC-- that is, I'd have that much room if I were to get a 7/8" BMC from a 240/260/280Z that has the bleed-screws on the outboard side. That looks like quite a bit of room when I eyeball it; 80mm is more than 3 inches. But I'm not even going to bother pursuing the idea if the SSS air cleaner happens to be, say, 81 mm tall. :?

So anyway, that's the question. Can anybody throw a tape or rule against a SSS air cleaner box and let me know how tall it is, right where it mounts onto the rearmost carb? (This is the kind of box I'm talking about):

I'm sure there's no way to make work. Out of sheer kindness and sympathy I'll take that air cleaner off your hands.

Err, not sure we're on the same wavelength, Dan. I'm only just thinking about looking for an SSS air cleaner-- if it can be made to fit. That's why I'm asking for its height... :?

Kidding, I would love to find one. I modified a roadster air box for mine. Your question on fit is height related do to taller l20b block? I changed to a brake master that has the bleed nipples located on the opposite side for clearance.

No, by "height" I mean how far does it stick out-- sideways, horizontally-- beyond the mouth of the carbs. You nailed the reason I'm asking, namely the bleed screws on the BMC.

No luck so far on finding out the height of the SSS cleaner... but what about your roadster air box? How tall is it, and/ or what kind of mods did you do to make it work?

I have a sss air filter box on duel su,s and it fits with a stock duel reservoir brake master. The master has the nipples on the other side and I ground off the forward boss on the engine side. To change the air filter I have to remove the foward reservoir and loosen the master from the firewall. But hey it fits and look great.

I cut the air horns and had to move them closer together as the carbs are closer than o the roadster. Picture does not not want to work. Measuring from thecenter mount of carb to top of box is 3 1/2".
