Byron - the only really difficult bit to find is the companion flange into the rear control arm. This is identical to the 510 companion flange other than having the correct 3x2 bolt pattern for Nissan CV joints. These can be sourced from R30, C31, S12, 910 Bluebirds etc. with IRS.

R31, C32, Z31 etc look similar but won't work as they are a thicker shaft to suit different bearings and arms.

If you have a R200 already you just use the whole R31/C32 axle with plug-in CV's take it apart and shorten and respline to suit. If you have a VLSD this won't work, as one stub will be too short to engage with the viscous centre, however if you're running an open or CLSD it's not a problem.

I believe R32 Skyline/A31/C33/S13 etc most later Nissan with the R200 VLSD come with a flanged inner CV and stub axle setup for those wishing to run a VLSD - not all are 3x2 though, a lot are 5x1 or even 6x1 (GTR etc).

I think if you were going to do it with a R160 or R180 I would be looking at IRS 910 Bluebirds or NA R30 Skylines or similar to get the correct spline sizes, however I'm pretty sure you would still end up needing to shorten the axles somehow.

Here's a pic of a completed setup with a R160 (I think) and an unmolested R31 IRS R200 rear end.

I know they look like the CV's take up a lot of length, but bear in mind the axle is free to slide in and out almost the entire length of the CV "cups" so there's a lot more axle length than you would think at first.

I think broke hit the nail on the head! Appreciate his well-research reply. My experience into looking into OEM CV conversion is similar. If you drop in a heavy R200 LSD you have a number of choices namely Z31 Turbo axles, etc. Basic components that aren't too hard to find here in the states and don't require much modification. But if you are looking to use a lighter R160/R180 it gets much more challenging even for those in Australia who has more access to a wider range of used Japanese cars to source OEM parts from.

Datsport - Doesn't sell a CV conversion kit anymore
MatDat - Similar kit to US providers with adapters (http://www.maddat.com.au/differential/d ... haft-axels)

I am in talks with another Australian driveline specialist who might be able to work a kit out. Very early but enough interest to put my DSS kit order on hold for now.

Alright - have a contact in Australia who has been working with 1600/510s for 35 years and has designed a CV conversion kit using only Nissan products. Will work perfectly with a Subaru STI differential (27 splines). No custom adapters or billet stub axles or Porsche/EMPI CVs. He gets the parts from either Australia or Japan, refinishes them and has custom axles made. The hardest part of the install job is to replace the companion flanges on both sides.

Pricing is at $1680 AUS which is about $1350 US. Still needs to be shipped so estimate another $200 AUS for that. Decided to be the guinea pig and will be placing the order next week when the owner is back from supporting a rally team racing a 510.

Will keep everyone updated with the progress and definitely the install!

Anything for us truly old school guys with the Nissan R-180, not Subaru?

So he did ask to confirm that the STI diff output with 27 splines and mentioned that they also did it using 25 splines axles. Is the stock R180 25 splines?

So would that be Les Collins then? I'm assuming he must have a private stash of R30 companion flanges then - they don't come up for sale often in NZ and when they do they get snapped up pretty fast.

Sweet man. I live like 35 min away from you with no traffic. Im in Pleasanton. I would love to come by and check those out when you have them. Let me know if that would be ok to meet up some time.

So they are not from Les Collins but he confirmed with me that this company was THE ONE to get it from and I highly respect his recommendations.

And yes - absolutely you are welcome to come check them out once I have installed them and at least given them a test drive or two. Don't want to recommend anything without some experience with the product.

So I finally attended to my failed CV. What a F'Kn mess and the amount of play I found between the axles splines and the CV is disturbing, disturbing enough where I'm not sure if I want to use these again. The CV slid right off the axle where I see on Youtube every one having to hammer them off what does that tell you excessive play? should there be that much? Anyway I have a question are these CV's on correctly? YouTube says no that grove should be facing towards the wheel/diff and if so how would this effect the performance and longivity of the CV?

Alright - someone asked about the receipt of mostly OEM Nissan parts that will go together. Here they are and good luck finding them!

- 27 Spline Inner Axle Flange and Inner CV (JDM S13 Nissan Silva with a CA18DE)
- 27 Spline Outer Companion Flange and Outer CV (R30 Skyline and/or 280ZX Automatic)
- Center Axles (Custom as all the OEM axles are too long)

The kit I ordered will be coming in the next week or so and once I have installed it and tested it, I will provide the source via PM. Was told by the source directly that it's getting harder and harder for him to get these parts so he really can't take on many orders at this time and he didn't want me to tell the world about it. Interesting....but I want to respect his request and also make sure the kit actually works!

Also yes, the original axels will need to be shortened.

Is there a better outer boot setup?

Its stamped steel with an inner boot seal. If the stamped retainer gets bent or warped the grease has an escape. Could a machined item be made with a true flat surface making things better from that side?

Like this?

http://www.racereadyproducts.com/cv-boo ... e-cv-boot/

Assuming we are still looking at the boot being the culprit.
