Hey guys!
I recently purchased a 240sx that was already converted to a carb'd setup using dual weber side drafts, motor overheated from a radiator leak and did piston damage, bought a new KA and want to swap the blocks and get this bad boy running again.
-I know nothing about this set up other than what I hope to learn here.
-The car was running fine previously to overheating
My questions are;
-What are the requirements to swap over the manifold? Do I need to mess with timing?All I have noticed thus far is the old motor had a smaller crank pulley, about 5 inches rather than the 6inches in diameter. Has anyone here posted their walk through? I have pictures below, if you guys cannot see them, I'd be happy to post them here as well. I hope to learn a little more about this set up and it seems the 510 guys are the people to go to!

Bought a carb'd KA24DE,swapping for new block, requirements?
Re: Bought a carb'd KA24DE,swapping for new block, requirements?
So you are switching back to EFI, that's why you want to switch the manifolds? If not, I would ditch those air horns and screens, they are very restrictive.
Re: Bought a carb'd KA24DE,swapping for new block, requirements?
You need to mess with timing because you're swapping the block and removing the head. The intake manifold doesn't have anything to do with timing, so I'm confused as to your actual question.schema wrote:bought a new KA and want to swap the blocks and get this bad boy running again.

And I agree with defdes regarding the trumpets. Some nice radiused air horns and a good filter setup are in the cards.

Re: Bought a carb'd KA24DE,swapping for new block, requirements?
Sorry for the confusion;
Not converting it back to EFI. Not swapping the heads. (the head on the new engine will stay) Just swapping the manifolds to the new stock KA.
Aside from swapping the manifolds to a new stock block and head, is there anything else I need to change to get this running? I didnt do the swap, so I do not know what was involved. All I can see aside from the manifold was a dial type fuel regulator put in. Was that all that was required for this conversion? I thought I read something about the distributor? Maybe I'm mistaken, but those are the answers im looking for. Starting from scratch, what do you need to do this conversion so I can ensure I don't miss anything upon startup?
Edit: Thanks for the air horn tip! Once I get this running I'll look in to swapping those out.

This isn't really the best medium for a question like that. The internet is good for specific questions, and with something as wide-ranging as your question, well, no one's going to be able to provide you with the 100% perfect answer.schema wrote:Starting from scratch, what do you need to do this conversion so I can ensure I don't miss anything upon startup?
The short version is that everything that isn't on your new block but is on your old block needs to be transferred over (assuming you've got a long block). You're asking about things like the fuel regulator - but a carb'ed KA (in a 240SX or 510) is not a common beast, and essentially all conversions like that are done differently from one to the next. The entire carb'ed intake will have to be swapped over, as will the ignition (again, lots of different ways to do this, so there's no one right answer to your question).
You need to be more specific in your background information. Is the "new" KA a complete engine, a long block, or what?
Also, can you post a picture of your distributor, including a pic of under the cap? I'd just like to see how it was done.
Also keep in mind that some KAs are different from others. Without knowing what year KA you have and what year KA you're going to replace it with, we won't be able to tell you what sorts of problems you might run into.

You bet! I'd be happy to take pics tonight. Understandably my questions are broad, as it correlates to my lack of knowledge of this set up, but, it's a learning experience.
The new motor is absolutely complete, pulled running, another KA24DE. Nothing on it was removed just yet. From what I can recall, the distributor was stock, but I will verify!

Re: Bought a carb'd KA24DE,swapping for new block, requirements?
The entire intake system and the ignition system will need to be swapped. Beyond that there are no guarantees, it'll depend on how the KA was converted to carbs, and the years of KAs you have, and what other modifications were made to your original KA.
If someone simply attempted to bolt on EFI to my SR20DE that I converted to run carbs, they'd be in for a rude, painful surprise.
