VG30DETT Swap Info?

Well I am as stated in my intro thread hoping to get a 69 shell, and I happened to see an engine for sale (VG30DETT From a 300zx) with 65,000 miles on it for $650 (the lowest I could find it online was over $1000) the seller said that he planned on putting it in his Z but the car was totaled before he could so now its just taking up space. Comes with the engine, 5-speed tranny, manifolds, ecu, harness, as well as the turbos and intercoolers.

So i was just thinking that it would be an amazing swap in a 510 (get to stick with nissan) putting down 300WHP and 283ft/lb torque. Granted that I would inevitably be modifying the engine hopefully before it would be put in, and probably gaining some performance.

This is just a scenario that MAY or MAY NOT happen, either way I thought it was interesting to post, I did search and found a few threads with some VG30DETT info, however I kinda wanted to know what mods you guys would suggest.

I was only thinking about pistons&rods since that would allow me to upgrade the turbos and get higher boost, that would also mean I would need new injectors, intercoolers, and possibly new intake manifolds with a higher capacity.

Also, any information on the transmission would be helpful as well. Thanks

E-mail Dave Lum, owner of www.datsuns.com and of the only VG30DETT 510 I know of. Which has been non-running longer than it has been running, at this point. david at datsuns.com

He can fill you in on all the pluses and minuses of the swap. But even he won't recommend it, and just point you to an SR20DET. Even stated as much in a past DQ Editor's Garage column. Little other information than Dave, since there's been very little uptake of that engine in a 510.

Like boost? SR. Like more displacement? KA24DE-T. Like N/A power and torque? VG33. Or go crazy with a VG34ET. The DE is just big, and the TT doesn't help. Havta change your BMC? Pull the engine :)

You really want more than 300 hp? It's been pretty well documented that any more than 250 is difficult and expensive to put down effectively to the ground.

Well the main reason I was considering it was because there was one for sale here and it seemed like it would be a pretty crazy car. I was even considering a ca18Det. Originally I thought RB would be the way to go, but it would probably take a lot of modification to fit in in the engine bay. So i am more leaning towards a KA-T

CA18DET would be my choice. Small and easy to fit into the engine bay, makes plenty of power and they are kinda rare to see in 510's for the most part. I've seen a VG30DETT in a 510 at Canby but I've never seen a CA18DET there...

I've seen Dave's car up here at our slalom. In a word - CRAZY! A real violent point and shoot boost monster. :twisted:
