KA swap cross member flip??

Post by miniman101 »

Hey guys, I'll be coming into a KA swap in a few weeks, I realize I'll have to cut and flip the cross memeber... thats fine. But I was wondering why It just cant be flipped 180 degrees and things bolt back in...? might be a stupid question, but just wondering...

thanks

the suspension is conected to the cross member, and that part can't be flipped.

And the bolt holes in the crossmember are not parallel with the frame rail - if you look the spacing is slightly narrower in the front pair compared to the rear pair.

Also the bolt hole themselves are tapered at one end.

What you describe has been done - core out the pivot area and weld it back in the opposite direction. However when that post cam up years ago, I did ask what this did to the actual position of the LCA mount fore/aft relative to the original position and I never got an answer. So until this is actually looked at...

I forgot to mention I am a machinist...
hmm, I'll have a look at it closer to the time when I am ready for the swap and its a bit warmer out...

Crossmember flipping has been documented here on The Realm (by Byron, I believe) and also in DQ:

DQ Volume 9 Issue 2 - Tech How-To: Reversing the Front Crossmember -- One of the tasks necessary to swap a front-sump engine (like the KA24DE or SR20DE/T) is reversing the front crossmember. DQ describes a simple and effective method to accomplish this.

Swag.

This is what a flipped X-member looks like. I'm no shop god, but it seems fairly simple. Make a jig, two 90 degree cuts, two welds. This mod has been done many times and is a proven solution. On the other hand coring and flipping the pivot mounts may sound easy, but who knows what gremlins this might invite to the party. There is a common practice of cutting out and razing the the pivot mounts to help with lowering as shown in the second pict. so maybe there is an untapped potential for a two for one mod here.

And finally, cover passes for good measure. The PO also messed up the locations of the front arm attachments which I corrected while I was at it, pushed the other one up to match.

Man, I would imagine that could have caused some interesting handling characteristics had you not caught it. The thought of that kind of shit keeps me up an night when I buy used stuff. Building my car has helped me develop some serious trust issues. Not sure yet if that's good or bad.
