KA24e D21 tranny - ok to use a 240sx clutch/flywheel?

Post by DADZSUN »

So I'm in the process of amassing parts for this winter's project (KA24e with R1 carbs, L16 mechanical fuel pump, L series dizzy, JWT cam). I've purchased a complete Nissan D21 pickup ($160, sold as scrap minus engine and tranny for $120 LOL). I want a lightened flywheel for this setup but the options for 240mm/D21/280zx/280z/260z/240z/720 setups are expensive.

However, the 240sx clutch/flywheel is about $150 less. It appears as though the Nissan/KA 240mm and 225mm flywheels are the exact same overall diameter, it's just the flywheel's clamping surface which is different. Many 240sx owners are running a 'White Bunny' setup in their tranny which upgrades their flywheel to the 240mm D21 flywheel along with a 350z/300zx clutch for more clamping force on their turbo setups.

So if I run a 240sx clutch/flywheel, the biggest 'loss' is the flywheel's reduced clamping surface 225mm vs 240mm which is a moot point for my light weight NA 510. Am I correct?

Alternatively, the RB20 250mm setup supposedly fits and still offers a nice price point...

In general the transmission doesn't care about which flywheel is used, only that all the clutch components together are for the same vehicle. Overall "height" of the installed clutch setup should match what you have, but the PP will be matched with a T/O bearing and collar that will/should account for any differences.

Perfect, so my logic was correct. Thanks for responding.

It took a lot of internet searching/reading for me to come to this conclusion. All this time I thought 240mm meant the flywheel/clutch OD as a unit, not the actual clamping surface diameter.

I would imagine the 225 clutch 'height' will likely be slightly smaller than the 240 D21 unit, but as you mentioned so long as it matches the PP it should be ok. I plan to purchas a flywheel/clutch/PP/Throwout-pilot bearing 'kit' to ensure everything is meant to work together.

I just posted a white bunny option you may want to look at from enjuku racing if you haven't already purchased.
