Door alignment question

Post by paul97 » 14 Jan 2020 06:14

]I am looking at possibly buying a 68 510 2 door but I have only seen pictures of it and I have not seen it in person and I noticed that the doors are do not line up with the quarter panels. I was wondering if the doors just needed to be aligned or are they damaged/bent or possibly from another car. If they are just out of alignment how hard is it to get them to line up? Do I just need to loosen the hinges and line them up?

its hard to say without seeing if the top of the door is hitting first. nice looking car. but I would look in the truck to see what kind of job was done when flared.

I really wish I could go and see it now. I hate waiting until May because if I get it then I won't be driving it this year. It needs a full interior and it has been sitting since 2015. He did say that he starts and runs it every once in a while and that it runs.

For what it is worth, my door sits a hair out of line too, I just did not worry about it as the door seals and latch all work fine, so did not want to mess with success.

I have looked at a bunch of 510's that had been on "bring a trailer" that didn't line up also and I saw some that were $25000.00 cars that the doors didn't line up on.

I’m with Keith on this. After I painted mine and put the doors on,they are a little proud at the bottom. I guess if you have a lot of time and patience you could align them.

Thanks for the info guys. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't going to be a big deal having them that way.

When I called about the car he said that it was a 1969 but when I saw the first picture I noticed that the wipers were wrong so I looked at all of the different years and I figured out that it was a 1968 especially after looking at the taillights. I didn't know that the 1968 had those wipers and I had thought that someone had customized it. I know that it's rare which is why I am thinking about buying it. It needs a complete interior including a dash because the old one is hacked up. It has WRX front seats and no rear seat. It also doesn't have a working heater core in it. The owner said that he has a good working one that will go with the car along with a working windshield wiper motor because the one in the car doesn't work. What do you think the value of the car would be once it is done? It has a L16 with a single Mikuni side draft carb,5 speed non dogleg transmission and a R160 LSD. You can see a picture of the dash here: http://www.the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f=32&t=32239

The heater core AND the wiper motor are 1968 only, so hopefully he is supplying correct 1968 spare parts! The dash is also 1968 only, but the 1969 dash "looks" similar with quick glance! I don't think ANY of the 1969 dash parts are the same............

FYI it could very well be titled as a 1969, if the car sat on the dealer lot when NEW & was actually sold in January or February of 1969. Make absolutely sure that the 1968 vin # is stamped on the firewall, right near the hood prop bracket.........do NOT count on only the aluminum vin tags. Unfortunately, some people would install vin tags & use a title from another year car, if they lost (or stolen!!) the original title. If that firewall vin # stamping is gone, be suspect!
