Windshield replacement

Post by paul97 »

I am going to replace the windshield in my 510 and found this video of a VW windshield replacement and it looks like it would be the same as mine but I wanted some feedback. Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq_0Qbhj ... re=related

That looks like how I do it. I have used both wire and rope. Also installed with and with out trim on the 510.

Exactly how I did mine Paul. Make sure you remove the metal trim piece in front of the dash otherwise it'll be much harder.

Thanks for posting this Paul. :D
It's time for me to do mine pretty soon.

Any other tips from the 510 masters out there?

I have never installed the glass with the trim in place on a 510 - I'm not sure it would work due to the flat stainless trim in a 510.

And unlike those nice round large radius curves on the glass - a 510 has nice sharp 90 degree corners, so the speaker wire won't work. I've used 14 and 3/8" fine weave nylon cord. Anything smaller can tear the rubber when pulling it through. Yes, same basic idea with a bit of a change. Seating the rubber from the inside by pushing it onto the lip around the perimeter will also be necessary. I've likely installed about 50 of these windshields and a few for members here in the club.

Hope this helps

Got my windows in!!!
Did the rear one yesterday and the front one today. 510s are sooo much better with windows in them
No more face stretching wind and aviator goggles.

My dad and I used talcum powder and 14-16ish gauge speaker wire (2 strands together) to string in the windows. It worked very well; the rear was easy front was a little more difficult. The front window rose up in the frame after stringing in the bottom section and the lower part of the pillars so I grabbed a 4.5 in suction cup with a handle so we could really pull the window down and string the last bit of the sides and the top of the window. I'm very happy with the result.

Thanks for the tips and good luck Paul; I'm sure you'll manage :D

Thanks. Do you have a picture of the wire? I think I know what it looks like but I wanted to see.

I don't think it's super critical exactly what you use as long as it doesn't cut the seal around the corners. You also have to pull on it pretty hard so it needs to be decently strong.
Here's a cell phone pics of the setup I used. Slippery is also a must.

Is it possible or wise to reuse the old rubber?

Mine is leaking at pass. side lower corner, so I'm wondering if I should fill the grooves with some kind of easy-to-clean adhesive before installing. Or could I go back afterwards with a needle-tip tool and inject some into the groove? Has anyone else had leake with a newly installed and apparently well-seated seal?
