Somethings never change-ignition switches
Somethings never change-ignition switches
After 40+ years you would think that there would be some great changes. But, not in Nissan/Datsun ignition switches;
Left to right, Nissan G35, Datsun 70-73 510, Datsun 68-69 510
The G35 harness fits them all!

That's outstanding!

pinout is different. At least from 68 to 70+ Just ran across it the other day. Lost the key to my 68 and plugged in a 70 ignition switch and it wouldn't work Did some strange things too. I've used the 620 ignitions in later 510's with no problems though.

Re: Somethings never change-ignition switches
While on the topic of ignition switches, can anyone tell me how to remove the assembly from the steering column? I've removed two screws, but there seems to be two pins that keep the assembly in place still...any suggestions? Or is it possible that it was supposed to be 4 screws and two have had the heads broken off previously?
Re: Somethings never change-ignition switches
'68 is the electrical oddball. '68 and '69 don't have lock and do have ACC, but it's to the left. Later 510s have it one step to the right.

Those 2 screws are breakaway screws used for theft prevention. Since the later cars had steering locks built in, they figured if you can't unscrew it, you can't unlock the wheel.dp61 wrote:While on the topic of ignition switches, can anyone tell me how to remove the assembly from the steering column? I take a dremel with a cutting wheel and carve a slot into them so I can use a screwdriver to remove them.

Re: Somethings never change-ignition switches
I didn't check the electrical characteristics of the switches but, I will and post the differences for future reference. It just amazed me that after 40+ years that a 2003-4 harness would plug into an old Datsun switch. If the switches are different internally, it's not hard to re pin the connector.icehouse wrote:pinout is different. At least from 68 to 70+ Just ran across it the other day. Re: Somethings never change-ignition switches
I recently wanted to put a NEW ignition switch in my early 1971 4 door, and found two different lock assemblies in my stash of USED parts. I also had a couple of NOS Beck Arnley switches, but they did not match up to the switch in my car.
My 1971 lock assembly had a switch with a SINGLE mounting ear, like the one on the left. I'm guessing that this SINGLE eared switch fits the earlier round gauge 1970-1971 cars.
I also have quite a few spare lock assemblies with a DOUBLE mounting ear switch, like the one in the middle. I'm guessing that this DOUBLE eared switch fits the later 1971-1973 cars.
Riley @ Lynchburg said that there were multiple part #'s over the years (typical for the Japanese cars!), and showed only one SINGLE eared switch still being available, so I ordered it. I'll post my findings, once I install it in the next few days........................

Re: Somethings never change-ignition switches
The 68 should have an IN-DASH ignition switch, not a locking unit on the steering column. Remove the complete switch assembly, look closely at the complete switch assembly, I'm pretty sure you will see a tiny little hole on the side, poke a paperclip in the hole to depress a detent pin, pull the lock cylinder out.
BTW, I never posted on this thread after I bought that single earred ingnition switch (electrical part) for my 70 510........it was exactly what I needed, so I think my notes/comments above are correct!
