Intro post and '69 510 SR20det build project "Booger 2"

Post by GreenPinch » 29 Apr 2019 22:29

Hello and welcome to my first post here. I will be telling you about my story, highlighting different aspects of my new build and sharing info with you all. I have had the 510 bug ever since I was looking for my first car. I was about 18. While scoping out Australian car mags 70s Corollas caught my attention. I showed my dad and he told me there was a car like that that has full independent suspension, used to be a popular race car and its some kind of Datsun. I soon began to find all the info I could about what soon would become an obsession.

Car shopping time for me. I looked for a 510 but could only find a 78 Celica sedan on craigslist for $900. My late uncle who was a master mechanic honored my request to check the car out with me. He showed up after a 2 hour drive, got in the car, drove around the Safeway parking lot for less and 2 minutes. Got out, shut the door, and says out loud, "This is a $300 car." He tells me and the owner it has a blown clutch and he said its not worth a penny more. The owner denied the offer for $300 but called back a few days later to tell me she wants to take the offer. My dad teaches me how to fix the clutch by making me do it, and I also learned how to drive a manual transmission on the same day. Lots of accidental burn outs happened. I had lots of fun with the doggish old mustang clone driving through the hilly Seattle back roads. I remember one time I got all 4 wheels in the air! oh the dumb things we do when we were young.

About 8 months pass before I find a 510 on craigslist, by now I have been drooling over pics of them so much that I went to see the car at in the dark 9pm all the way in Tacoma, and I was in North Seattle. It was the car that was going to take me to Shasta on multiple occasions and never break down on me the entire time I drove it. 72 2 door, L18 dual SU, 280zx struts, rear sway bar, cut springs, 280zx close ratio trans. It was loud and felt light and stiff. It handled really well compared to the Celica which felt like a boat. If a corner was involved I could drive it faster than most could in modern cars. The 510 was my Dream car and I owned it!

I soon planned a Shasta trip and got the car painted lime green.

This photo is Booger 1 at a Blue Lake Datsun meet years and years ago. I won some raffles, I hope to go back again this year!

Project "Booger 2"

Post by GreenPinch » 30 Apr 2019 11:53

Booger 2 started out as an overly lowered basket case. It is a 69 two door, another Tacoma find! I got for $800 and it was 50 percent disassembled. So low that the TC buckets have popped of the frame part way. It was the year I liked, and it was fairly straight. It was going to be a perfect home for my planned ca18det swap. i towed it home and had my buddy Ray Stonehocker (510s in his blood) get it in running order. The wheels are 13" Enkie mesh. I had a T/A Radial blow because the damn thing was so low it scraped the rear fender well until it chewed a hole. Later on the motor dies driving home. I soon got some stock bluebird springs from Carter B, and a stock motor. and then it goes into store mode for a number of years.

There was one year at Shasta where a kind sir gave me a ride in his SR powered 510. It was thrilling to say the least. I knew from that point I wanted to have classic with a modern engine. I originally started collecting parts for a CA18det swap but when I finally had the funds, I did a lot of research and finally bought a late s13 engine from a 180sx. The fact that I could one day put on a high flow head with solid rocker pivots (the VE HEAD) was what mostly got me over the hump and into the SR world. And the fact the the CA is almost as antique and rare as the Datsun it was going to sit in with less than 1/10th the aftermarket industry support as the SR was also a deciding factor.

This is some progress shots of the rear trailing arm mods that David Carroll is crafting for me.

The tubes that are being welded in will hold a z31 turbo rear bearing housing. These will be mated to stock z31 turbo clutch LSD r200 and z31 half shafts with pathfinder centers.

I am looking for a garage for rent now in the Seattle Area, I was forced to move in middle of this project.

Nice car bud. Looking forward to seeing your progress and the end result. Considering a conversion in my 72 510 coupe as well.

High quality work and planning. How much hp are you anticipating?

Thank you I got the arms completed. Dave does the best work. He added the re-enforcement plates that are similar to the '73 Safari rally arms (he has pictures of the originals) He can replicate this he said it would be about $400 unless you sand blast the rust and paint off then it would be cheaper. To make this I bought two 2" sections of 3+3/4" inch DOM with 3" ID. The right sized hole saw will allow the DOM tubes to be tapped into the hole precisely. link to steel supplier: https://www.speedymetals.com/pc-3553-82 ... -tube.aspx

Thanks! I am anticipating 205 hp on a stock SR at first, but the r200 setup is there so I can go much higher when I do. R200 rear ends can handle 500ft lbs of torque with no sweat apparently. I was thinking of going to a VG30e swap after talking to Dave Carroll a bunch but if I build the SR20 it will have a Garrett g25 550 and a p12 VE head, probably 400hp or more. The VG has a lower center of gravity and sits farther back, allowing you to run a smaller sway bar (5/8") and a more nimble car overall.

I have been toying around with the idea of building my car with the rally stance, just to have something different. Not sure how its going to feel compared to my old low 510. Image this one is for sale link: https://www.eastafricansafarirally.com/ ... -car-sale/
