what up everyone! noob here!

Post by MRGAME »

just bought a 1971 4dr datsun. it needs alot of work. the rust is real! i really dont know much about the car. ive done oil changes and tranny oil changes and simple bolt on stuff(intake coilovers header stuff). when it comes to internal engine stuff i could get lost. but i like doing stuff like this. btw i dont have friends that work on cars so its a bit hard to ask for help. where im at right now on the car is trying to get it started. it has an electronic fuel pump hooked up to the engine and gas in the tank. i can hear the fuel pump turn on but nada. dude who i bought it from put some gas in the carbs and it started up for about 10 seconds and ran smooth. it has oil(looks okay and is enough). so im a little stumped. ive been just cleaning the crap out of the car until i have enough money to get the car looked at and fixed. i bought the car for $1500 which i think is pretty damn good since the dude was asking $2500. the car also has all the trim and lights. thank god! ive seen the prices for that shit online and omfg lol. yeah its got some rust and dents but im confident i can learn how to deal with that stuff.

Carbs? Dual Hitachi SU type?

Are the chokes connected up???

Take the fuel line off at the carbs and direct into a suitable container. Turn the electric pump on... got gas?????

NO?

Where is the fuel pump? It should be mounted as low and as close to the tank as possible to reduce the effort of sucking or drawing fuel into the pump. If in the engine bay is it getting fuel from the tank?

If NO, check the fuel filter or replace if you have never done so.

YES pump pumps gas...

Is there fuel in the SUs? Floats stuck? Float level incorrect?

http://www.teglerizer.com/sucarbs/techtip6.htm#Insp look for the following section...

CONTROL AND ADJUSTMENT
Idling adjustment
Inspection of float level
Adjustment of float level

thanks for responding dude. sorry i was working on the car in the morning and ran straight to work after lol.
carbs yes dual i think a14? i duno
chokes yes i think
yeah did this and there is gas pumping.
fuel pump is slightly below the gas tank on the wheel well.
fuel filters look good but ill check them more closely.
nice link!
ill check the float level in the morning.

i had a friend come who i kinda skate with.
he was very knowledgeable of the carborated engine.
basically the wires going from the battery to the solnoid were slightly corroded(on the solnoid side).
got some sand paper and sanded the corrosion off.
bam! engine is now turning over and trying to start.
wont start.
so we start checking the gas line like you said.
gas looked fine.
we found out there was a piece of wire that is supposed to be be connected to throttle maybe somewhere that pulls down the little black thing on the bottom of the carb to allow gas into the carb.
--ill post up a picture of what im talking about in a bit so its alot easier to understand--
he pulled back on it and the car started!
got it to idle around 2k(i was also pressing on gas a bit).
the car ran very nice for 600k miles. lol
he even said so himself haha

Sounds just like linkage issues.
Can you lift the barrels ( the cylindrical part inside the carbs with the slots on them in your pics) with your finger and do they drop down smoothly and with some resistance?

It looks like the chokes are being held down with that spring. Not sure what is going on there.

Ok, it's not every day we get to see an A series engine in a 510.

Can I guess that you or the car are from Mexico?

Looking forward to seeing more on your car and build.
