Howdy - Derek

Post by dg510 »

Hi Folks,

Derek from datsun510.com here. I've been MIA and incognito for the last few years, but now want to hit some of the shows and fun runs. A few details: Based in Norcal, been into 510s for about 30 years, am partial to sweeping needle 1969/early 70. So ugly. So awesome.

I'm currently in a 1969 2 door that Kelvin dubbed "The Micro Monster" when it had an L13ET. That engine has been pulled and replaced by a Z18ET with MS3 EFI. Am now trying to finish a build with the L13 bottom end, Z20S MPG head, and twin IHI RHB31 turbos. Although, after 2 years off the road, I'd like to drive it for the next year before pulling it back apart.

Looking forward to meeting you at upcoming events.

Derek

Hi Joel, I'm in Oakland. How are you fairing with the rain? My friends in Boulder Creek were using 35 the day that it washed away.

Nice of you to ask. Aside from the 150 year old oak that fell on my house, all OK. The house grabbed it and stopped it before it could come all the way down, just crunched my pantry. All roads blocked for a day or two, 17 still at two lanes only.

L13, definately interesting as there are so few around. I have one, and I know of one in Oregon, both came in L13 powered 68 (4 wheel drum brake/3on the tree) cars. I have read that the L13 crank was imported and used by a few people in their race cars to get the 510 into smaller engine classes. But it's still a rare find to see an L13 crank anywhere. I was told many years ago that there was a carbed turbo L13 engine built locally and never got off the engine stand. And the most recent car was one Julian (Okfine) imported as a RHD bluebird (which he rebadged and named the Whitebird), that car was converted to SR power so the drivetrain is 'somewhere' out there.

Stay in touch with your project, defiantly outside the box.

Hi Byron, Julian's drivetrain is under my work bench :) I wanted a spare in case I detonated mine. Robello built my bottom end and I got a head from Mike Pierce of Pierce Manifolds along with EFI manifold from an import engine. Jim Wolf modified a 240SX ECU and I cut down a 240SX distributor to fit the L-Series front cover. It only had a little T25 turbo, but I told Robello to build it to handle 21 PSI all the time. With that small turbo and the set up of the waste gate, I was able to shift at 16 PSI all day long with no wear to the bottom end. Clark from Jim Wolf had also worked on one L13 in a race car and said they were good for 9500 RPM all day. Mine got valve float around 7,000 RPM with stock springs, but I can see how it would hold up with a good head. Let me know if you now want an L13 as I still have Julian's :)
