New to the site, first post

Postby Masterblaster68 » 22 Feb 2017 08:22

Hello, new to the site. I have had a few datsuns though. I had a 68 4door but rust git the better of it. I was building a 72 wagon, it has quite a bit of work done but needs to be finished. It has a sr20det with rack and pinion steering so I could run the stock exhaust manifold, 280zx front struts and brakes, b210 power brake booster, and I put a rx7 rear end under it with a limited slip. It also has rear disc brakes with a working e-brake and a pan hard bar. When I had kids money had to go else where and I never really finished it. the work was done at DGR in San Jose at the time and they are not around anymore. When I first got it running and driving the motor was great, but I was driving on the freeway and the brass oil plug adapter for a oil pressure gauge broke and all the oil came out of the motor and was lost. I got another one and this one seems to run ok but after it warms up it smokes out the exhaust. Maybe the turbo seal? when it is cold it does not smoke. I am also picking up another 68 four door today and it is in really great condition.

Welcome to the site.

You are NOT the first to suffer engine failure because of those stupid brass fittings. If that gauge still uses those thin little lines, you must change that out also, as those plastic lines will fail too. I have seen the gauges have an issue too, as most of that stuff is really old now.

We were on a drive to Seattle once, when one of our friends gauge started to fill up with oil, as the bourbon tube failed inside.

Those plastic lines fail. I had one fail to my boost gauge. It shot air everywhere. What a mess!

SMITH gauges were bad for that, English stuff never worked well at best. Maybe they thought that as their engines leaked all the time anyhow, that a bit more from the oil line would not be a problem....
